Across The Universe
Katie Noonan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup
They slither wildly as they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind
Possessing and caressing me

Jai Guru Deva, om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes
They call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box
They tumble blindly as they make their way across the universe

Jai Guru Deva, om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of earth are ringing
Through my opened views inciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe

Jai Guru Deva, om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Jai Guru Deva

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Katie Noonan's song "Across the Universe" paints an image of words that are flowing out like rain and slipping away, sounding like a stream of consciousness that is escaping out of the singer's grasp. There is mention of both sorrow and joy, perhaps indicating a sense of emotional turmoil. The opening verse ends with a line that hints at a sense of desire and physical touch, with the words "possessing and caressing me." The use of a paper cup to catch the words is a visceral reminder of how easily words can be lost or discarded once they have left our mouths.

The chorus of the song is repeated four times, with the words "Nothing's gonna change my world" being the main theme. This repetition could be viewed as a chant or mantra, encouraging the singer to accept the world as it is and not to be consumed by the seeming chaos around her. The inclusion of the phrase "Jai Guru Deva, om" adds to the spiritual mood of the song, with Jai Guru Deva a term used to express respect and devotion to one's teacher or guru.

The second verse of the song again uses the metaphor of sight, with the singer receiving images of broken light that dance before her. The words "thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letterbox" suggest that the singer's mind is racing and at times unfocused. The repetition of the phrase "they call me on and on across the universe" demonstrates how easily our thoughts can transport us to different places and times, both real and imaginary. The final verse of the song includes references to the universal themes of love and laughter, reinforcing the idea that despite our individual struggles, we are all connected and part of something greater.

@chrispalmo The album is Katie Noonan, "Blackbird: The Music Of Lennon And McCartney" - I think it's just gorgeous. I went and saw her perform it live, with just a drummer, a double bass, a baby grand piano and a saxophone, and it was really something! It's available on the iTunes store, but if you're looking for the CD in Australia try JBHIFI, or for anywhere else in the world, amazon or ebay? Best of luck.

Isn't she a wonderful reminder that among the garbage, the dross and the mediocrity that true greatness can be found? This woman is a phenomenon. Thanks for posting this...she's simply beautiful. Peace.

@chrispalmo It does appear on an album of Lennon & McCartney songs she released, if that helps, but it's with a small combo of jazz musicians accompanying her rather than an orchestra.
