Stevens grew up in Middlebury, Connecticut. Her parents are Mark Stevens and Clara Francisco. Her Portuguese grandmother, Rita Francisco, is battling Alzheimer's disease. Stevens is currently a senior at Pomperaug High School in Southbury, CT. She was named the 2009 Westbury Outstanding Teen at the Greater Watertown Scholarship Pageant. Stevens speaks fluent Portuguese.
Stevens was instrumental in the creation of the Evan Gagnon Memorial Scholarship Fund, which gives college scholarships to the seniors of Pomperaug High School. Evan Gagnon, who died in January 2009 at the age of 2, was the son of Stevens' Spanish teacher. Also, Stevens has been a member of Pomperaug's High School Varsity Swim Team all four years.
Stevens first performed for an audience at five years old, when she sang the national anthem at a party for a politician in her hometown. Since she was young, Stevens has been active in her local theater community. When she was 7 she sang From This Moment On by Shania Twain at her aunt's wedding. She also played Nellie Forbush in Pomperaug High School's South Pacific. She also performed at Carnegie Hall at the age of 13.[7]
She counts Whitney Houston and Jason Mraz among her favorite artists. Her musical influences include Taylor Swift, and her own brother. Among the instruments she can play are guitar, piano, cello, and flute; however, she never had a chance to play them on American Idol prior to her elimination from the competition.
Put Your Records On

And they told me I don't need to worry.
Summer came like cinnamon
So sweet,
Little girls double-dutch on the concrete.
Maybe sometimes, we've got it wrong, but it's alright
The more things seem to change, the more they stay the same
Girl, put your records on, tell me your favourite song
You go ahead, let your hair down
Sapphire and faded jeans, I hope you get your dreams,
Just go ahead, let your hair down.
You're gonna find yourself somewhere, somehow.
Blue as the sky, sunburnt and lonely,
Sipping tea in the bar by the roadside,
(Just relax, just relax)
Don't you let those other boys fool you,
Got to love that afro hair do.
Maybe sometimes, we feel afraid, but it's alright
The more you stay the same, the more they seem to change.
Don't you think it's strange?
Girl, put your records on, tell me your favourite song
You go ahead, let your hair down
Sapphire and faded jeans, I hope you get your dreams,
Just go ahead, let your hair down.
You're gonna find yourself somewhere, somehow.
'Twas more than I could take, pity for pity's sake
Some nights kept me awake, I thought that I was stronger
When you gonna realise, that you don't even have to try any longer?
Do what you want to.
Girl, put your records on, tell me your favourite song
You go ahead, let your hair down
Sapphire and faded jeans, I hope you get your dreams,
Just go ahead, let your hair down.
Girl, put your records on, tell me your favourite song
You go ahead, let your hair down
Sapphire and faded jeans, I hope you get your dreams,
Just go ahead, let your hair down.
Oh, you're gonna find yourself somewhere, somehow
The lyrics of Katie Stevens's song "Put Your Records On" seem to be about enjoying life, being yourself, and not worrying about what others think of you. The first verse talks about three birds that sat on the singer's window and told her not to worry. Then she describes how summer feels like cinnamon and little girls are playing jump rope outside. The chorus encourages the listener to put on their favorite record, let their hair down, and go after their dreams. The verse mentions a girl sipping tea in a bar by the roadside, and the lyrics suggest she not let anyone else's opinion influence how she feels about herself. In the bridge, the singer acknowledges that sometimes life can be difficult, but it's important to realize that you don't have to try to be someone else. The song ends urging the listener to find themselves somewhere and somehow.
