Power
Katy Perry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was fine before I met you
Truth is that I lost myself inside you
It is not fair to put all that on you
But you took control of a vulnerable soul

Yeah, I am my mother's daughter
And there are so many things I love about her
But I have, I have to break the cycle
So I can sit first at the dinner table

You can clip my wings, can't wield my powers
Stole my time, but I make up the hours
'Cause I'm a goddess and you know it
Some respect, you better show it
I'm done with you, siphoning my power
Power

Hell hath no fury like a woman
Reborn, and now I'm burning like a blue flame
Once more, but don't mistake my warn for weakness
Don't bite the hand that feeds, I'll
You'll never eat, no-oh

You can clip my wings, can't wield my powers
Stole my time but I make up the hours
'Cause I'm a goddess and you know it
Some respect you better show it
I'm done with you, siphoning my power
Power

And now I'm taking it back
Electric as fuck (come on)
You can't quiet this thunder, no
Yeah, I'm taking it back
And all the way up
Even in the dark, I glow

You can clip my wings, can't wield my flowers
Stole my time but I make up the hours
'Cause I'm a goddess and you know it
Some respect, you better show it
I'm done with you, siphoning my power
Power

Overall Meaning

Katy Perry's Power is a song about a woman who has found herself losing her sense of self after being with a man. It is not entirely his fault, but she points out how she gave him control over her vulnerable soul. She then goes on to say how she is her mother's daughter but wishes to break the cycle and be her own person.
The lyrics are full of self-empowerment; the woman singing the song finds her own power again and refuses to let anyone control her or take away her power. She sees herself as a goddess and deserves respect, which she demands from the other person who took her power away. It is not clear whether the other person was deliberately doing this or if it was more subtle, but the song focuses on the fact that she is done with having her power siphoned.

The song takes on a feminist tone that suggests women should be in control of their own lives and empowered to be their own person. It cautions against men who may try to take control and suggests that women should be in charge of themselves, even in relationships. The phrase "hell hath no fury like a woman," which is a modified version of a line from Shakespeare, emphasizes this point. Women should be respected and allowed to exist on their terms.

oh GOD, the production of this song is OUTSTANDING just the intro alone deserves a Grammy, haters can say whatever they want but Katy fucking delivered in this album!

@elbiogonzalez680

She is a fucking queen

@marcusmiro7481

The best song of her career IMO. People are so cringe. Literally wrote her off because of a haircut and the public was ready for a new famous woman to tear down. The most common criticism of her prior to this album was that she was fake. The main criticisms of this album were things like people thinking the lyrics are bad (lyrics that clearly made the cut because she wrote them herself - no professional writer would write the ping pong line in Dance With the Devil,) that the album was too all over the place (showing that it had less corporate direction, meaning she did have more control, because her label would have kept the album more "in line" with her image,) and that IT WAS TOO SERIOUS FOR KATY PERRY. The woman constantly being attacked for being "fake." She releases an album that's significantly more serious than her previous albums and.... people are mad it's too serious.

Wrong place and wrong time honestly. She was on top of the world, and it had been a while since the public had some fun tearing down a female popstar like that. Then she changed her signature hair, and since the public treats female popstars like communal pets, this was a no-no, because now she wasn't sex bombshell 1950's pinup Katy Perry anymore.

Now that she's had a baby she's sexually invalid to a lot of people so now they've let up on shitting on her so much (unless she ends up gaining weight of course.)

People suck :D

@Adamiscool247

Yes katy perry is a godess and I been a katycat since the beginning and I always will be I am a katycat till the day I die and in the afterlife

@slayvion7440

When she said she was her mother’s daughter and she had to break the cycle...that line alone deserves a Grammy lol

@adrianaavila8853

Slayvion, Does she have a good close relationship with her mom? I really appreciate her words. Relate-able.

@slayvion7440

Adriana Avila i honestly don’t know.

@cilibekd

I think she is really close to her parents, but she doesn't agree with them about most things. They are conservative Christians who don't really see any virtue in her career. But they are still devoted to each other which is pretty special given their discord about lifestyle. She calls her mom during all of her Witness tour shows.

@lm-mj-beautyedits

cilibekd not true she has said herself that her parents support her. As a Christian, Katy's music is not bad. They just don't appreciate songs like peacock which is understandable

@lunalluna9401

@@lm-mj-beautyedits yeah I think I read that they didn't support at first because her debut single was 'I kissed a girl' lol I want to believe they respect her career now after all these years.
