Witness
Katy Perry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I lost it all today, would you stay?
Could my love be enough to stimulate?
If shit hit the fan, grenades got thrown
Would you still show, oh?
Could you go down with me to the mat?
Could we get back up and eventually laugh?
Roll eyes at highs, cheers in the lows, and stay in the flow, oh
'Cause I, I only got this life
And I ain't got the time, no
Not to get it right, oh

We're all just looking for connection
Yeah, we all want to be seen
I'm looking for someone who speaks my language
Someone to ride this ride with me
Can I get a witness? (Witness)
Will you be my witness? (Witness)
I'm just looking for a witness in all of this
Looking for a witness to get me through this

When you tell me everything, and there's no holes
You can scroll through anything, you've got the codes
Nothing to hide
It's all in their eyes
And we just know, o-o-o

'Cause I, I only got this life
And I ain't got the time, no
Not to get it right, oh

We're all just looking for connection
Yeah, we all want to be seen
I'm looking for someone who speaks my language
Someone to ride this ride with me
Can I get a witness? (Witness)
Will you be my witness? (Witness)
I'm just looking for a witness in all of this
Looking for a witness to get me through this (through this, through this, through this)

Will you be my witness?
Could you be the one that speaks for me?
Will you be my witness?

We're all just looking for connection (we're all just looking)
Yeah, we all want to be seen
I'm looking for someone who speaks my language
Someone to ride this ride with me
Can I get a witness? (Witness)
Will you be my witness? (Witness,w ill you be my witness?)
I'm just looking for a witness in all of this
Looking for a witness to get me through this

Oh, ah
Oh, oh

Hey, ah
Oh, hey

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Katy Perry's song Witness appears to be a plea for someone to be with her no matter what happens. She contemplates the possibility of losing everything she has and wonders if the love she has to offer would be enough to keep the person she cares about. She's seeking someone who understands her, someone who speaks her language and can ride the rollercoaster of life with her. The chorus of the song includes the phrase "Can I get a witness," which seems to mean that Katy is looking for someone who can recognize her struggles, her failures, and her pains, and can be there to support her through it all. She represents the desire of all humans to be seen, heard, and understood.

The second verse of the song talks about opening up to someone in a way that leaves no secrets or hidden spaces. The idea is that the person she's addressing knows everything about her, and it's all okay because they are in this together. The lyrics suggest that having someone who truly knows you without judgment is comforting and essential. The song seems to suggest that life is challenging and comes with ups and downs, but with the right person, it becomes much easier to get through those struggles. The melody of the song is mellow, and the music video emphasizes Katy's vulnerability, portraying her as isolated and alone in a house with a group of strangers watching her through screens.

This album truly didn’t deserve the hate it received. This is one of Katy’s best albums. Full of bangers. We all need to apologize to Katy. And thank her for this masterpiece of an album. <3

Facts, i love this album very much

@wolfumz

I don't really understand where all the hate came from, to be frank. The album is a nice iteration/evolution on her past work. It's really well produced. She doesn't have any ballads where she belts it out, but I never really liked that from her anyway.

I think that, cutting her hair, and the way she promoted the album, I think that's really what did her in, and elicited the hate. Perry got too vulnerable. The public saw she was flawed and human, she said stupid stuff, she cried with her therapist, she has half-baked ideas about her spiritual and religious beliefs... the public saw that she's human, in other words. It was a little too raw and too naked. I think we like our celebrities to have a certain level of myth surrounding them. Compare the Witness promotion to the Weeknd and his last album, which is all layered in mystery and metaphor.

It's really hard for any musician to stay cool for 30 years straight. David Bowie did it, but I can't think of anyone else.
