I don't really understand where all the hate came from, to be frank. The album is a nice iteration/evolution on her past work. It's really well produced. She doesn't have any ballads where she belts it out, but I never really liked that from her anyway.

I think that, cutting her hair, and the way she promoted the album, I think that's really what did her in, and elicited the hate. Perry got too vulnerable. The public saw she was flawed and human, she said stupid stuff, she cried with her therapist, she has half-baked ideas about her spiritual and religious beliefs... the public saw that she's human, in other words. It was a little too raw and too naked. I think we like our celebrities to have a certain level of myth surrounding them. Compare the Witness promotion to the Weeknd and his last album, which is all layered in mystery and metaphor.

It's really hard for any musician to stay cool for 30 years straight. David Bowie did it, but I can't think of anyone else.

This album shows us a side of Katy we've never seen. Its nothing like the past 3 album which is more suitable for radio play. Witness is so personal and each song tells us a story of her journey. The lyrics are so captivating, mature and so in depth. Not the usual pop-ish type of album where you'll here it frequently on the radio. This is purposeful pop and it's slowly growing. I've gotta praise Katy for taking risk to experiment with different sounds and with her vocals. The ballads on this album is so emotional and I am 100% sure it will touch you. Kudos Katy!

I didn't think much of Katy at first other than just being eye candy when she started years ago, four albums (5) later, my opinion has drastically changed. Katy is an amazing artist. Her music sounds like Nu BossaNova, extremely earthy, like inhaling fresh mountain air. Her music sounds timeless and she's very consistent with her sound. I'll admit that I jumped on the Katy Perry hate train, but after detaching myself from all the bias and negativity and listened to this album as a blank slate, I realized that it was just very misunderstood. Authenticity always carries the risk of rejection. Surely Katy knew that going in... My hope is that she remains undeterred. After Columbia chastised her for the drop in sales, she reassured them with clear plans for her future work. Hopefully she'll carry the same rawness and integrity onward.
