Lady Grey
Katzenjammer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lady Grey, you tell a smile
What is your secret, what's your lie?
You lived a long, hard life
Your memory may fade, but you're still wise
I wonder where you've been
What you've accomplished, what you've seen
In such a long, hard life
Did you ever dance, were you someone's wife?

Take me, take me away
Way back to the days when you were
Crazy, crazy for living
Oh, sweet twenty-nine
And you looked fine
And you looked fine

Lady Grey, dressed up so nice
Where do you go when you close your eyes?
Do you hear the words I say
And can you remember yesterday?
What do you comprehend?
Can you even feel me in your hand?
Lady Grey, with your knockout smile
Hoping you feel it was worth the while

Take me, take me away
Way back to the days when you were
Crazy, crazy for living
Oh, sweet twenty-nine
And you looked fine
You looked fine

Lady Grey, no doubt that time
Has withered your hands, but still your smile
Is as sparkling as way back when
You broke the hearts of all young men
Lady Grey, when I see you now
Sick in your bed, but still you smile
When you hear the music play
Wonder how it would be if you could

Take me, take me away
Way back to the days when you were
Crazy, crazy for living
Oh, sweet twenty-nine
And you looked fine

Take me, take me away
Way back to the days when you were
Crazy, crazy for living
Oh, sweet twenty-nine
And you looked fine
You looked fine

You looked fine (yeah, yeah)

Overall Meaning

The Katzenjammer song 'Lady Grey' tells the story of an elderly woman who has lived a long and eventful life. The song explores the idea of the passage of time and the loss of memories and abilities that comes with age. The lyrics wonder about the woman's past, her accomplishments, and whether she has experienced love and marriage. It also contemplates the value of the experiences she has had and whether she believes her life was worth living. Despite the physical effects of aging, the woman's smile remains bright and her spirit is unfazed as she listens to music and reflects on her past.

I missed these girls when they were performing together, but I’ve been snagged by them now. Simply put, they are a joy. Good music will always shine through. What talents they all are! Although I’m sad for missing them when they were a ‘thing,’ they are recorded for posterity. I intend to watch and save all they have recorded and I’m on my way to collecting their discography. For me, they are the best all female band I’ve seen. Quality, class, talent, humour and soul. They can be my nightmare mirror any day!

Why is Katzenjammer so unpopular? They're so good!

Jon

They have not been noticed in the wide world yet. but unpopular is kinda wrong word to use. They have their marked in countrys as Germany and their home country Norway at least.

Leiv Hellebø

yes...i dont know

In the UK I think their unique sound just didn't quite gel. They needed more promotion than they got. I remember Terry Wogan had them on his radio show a couple of times but there's so much competition that no matter how good you are you have to shout very loud to be heard. As an English language band, it's a pity they didn't move here, that would have done it, but they'd cracked Germany so that was never going to happen.

Katzenjammer WAS popular, mostly in Germany and at home... around 2009-13. Just think about Norway a while. Beautiful but harsh nature, hard living in villages with just a few inhabitants. You feel the Creator everywhere (i was in Norway). It was not a joke to live in Norway just a few years ago and then tehy found the oil and blahblah blah.. but the nature of the nation can not change so quickly. The nation stayed pure inside - the charm of Katzenjammer girls is absolutely different from the kind of Britney Spears etc. They are "old-school" women with big W. As I see it. They even did not want to make a huge worldwide carrer - and the mainstream is not propagating this kind of feminin, empathetic Women. So they take a step back and surely they are today mothers of their families.

Yes...why not??

Thinking about my own mother who would be turning 100 this year. Brings a tear to the eye of this 60 year old (son) every time I hear this song.
