1) A folk group from Oslo, Norway. Mixing a variety of musical styles with multi-instrumentalism, the band consists of Anne Marit Bergheim, Sol Heilo, Marianne Sveen and Turid Jørgensen. Most of their material is written by their friend Mats Rybø; however, the band also contribute songs written by themselves. The band is easily recognizable by their signature custom Balalaika bass with the face of a cat painted on it, echoing the true meaning of the band's name: "Katzenjammer" is a German word for "cat's wail" (and also a dated term for "hangover.")
Katzenjammer was formed by the four girls in 2005. They came to prominence NRK's "Urørt" project; a platform for up-and-coming bands and artists to showcase their material and win national exposure. They were also contestants on "Kjempesjansen", a Norwegian talent show. With their unique sound and exceptional live shows, Katzenjammer slowly but surely gained a reputation as an act to watch. In 2007, they held a concert at Norwegian Wood, a famous Norwegian music festival, as part of their Underwood line-up. The band eventually scored an underground hit with "A Bar in Amsterdam" and made it as far as the finals in Urørt's "Artist of the Year" awards.
Early in 2008, Katzenjammer served as support acts for various other Norwegian bands including Kaizers Orchestra, who had openly supported the band. Throughout their career, they have often been referred to by the media as a female Kaizers Orchestra, as both bands are famous for their eclectic musical style and energetic live shows. They also made several TV appearances. In October of that year, they released their first studio album, Le Pop. The album received many good reviews and the subsequent tour helped build a fanbase. The album was released in international markets with an altered tracklist in 2009.
Their second studio album, A Kiss Before You Go, is scheduled for official release on 9 September 2011. In anticipation of the album, the singles "When the Laughter's Gone" and "I Will Dance (When I Walk Away)" were released earlier that year. Former band member Marianne Sveen left the band in the beginning of 2016.

Lady Marlene
Katzenjammer Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Everyone's dancing with Lady Marlene
Fear is the color of all that they wear
Mother-of-pearl palace cold like her heart of stone
Silently soldiers dance till they fall
Icicle chandelier shining so cold
They are draped in dread in her masquerade
Wind to blow ghosts to the sky above
Deep in despair they cry, "Where is the love?"
Oh, the north wind blows ghosts to the sky above
Deep in despair they cry, "Where is the love?"
Murk is her grip on the world
Calamity rules when her flag is unfurled
Turn your backs on Marlene and let there be love
Pallid and pale, you all fall asleep as the
North wind blows ghosts to the sky above
Deep in despair they cry, "Where is the love?"
Oh, the north wind blows ghosts to the sky above
Deep in despair they cry, "Where is the love?"
North wind blows ghosts to the sky above
Deep in despair they cry, "Where is the love?"
Oh, the north wind blows ghosts to the sky above
Deep in despair they cry, "Where is the love?"
In Katzenjammer’s song “Lady Marlene,” the lyrics paint a picture of a dark, mysterious character who rules her world with an iron grip. Lady Marlene is described as cold-hearted, with fear being the color of all that her subjects wear. The soldiers dance with her until they fall, draped in dread in her masquerade. The icicle chandelier shines so coldly, symbolizing her icy presence in her palace. Lady Marlene takes your hand and commands the wind to blow ghosts to the sky above, as her subjects are deep in despair and cry, “Where is the love?”
The song suggests that Lady Marlene is an oppressive ruler who causes calamity and despair wherever she goes. Her pallid and pale subjects fall asleep as the north wind blows ghosts to the sky above, and they cry out for love amidst their despair. However, the song ends with a message of hope – by turning their backs on Lady Marlene, they can choose love instead of fear and find a way out of their despair.
Overall, Lady Marlene represents a powerful, yet destructive force in the song’s world. The lyrics suggest that by rejecting her rule and choosing love instead, the characters can break free from her grasp and find a way towards a brighter future.
