1. Kayak is a legendary Dutch progressive rock band, mostly known during the 1970’s. Formed from the ashes of the group High Tide Formation (who released only one single before disbanding), the early sound was typified by the contrasting songwriting styles of keyboardist Ton Scherpenzeel and drummer Pim Koopman, as well as the distinctive vocals of Max Werner.
The band saw an increasing streamlining of their songwriting, as well as greater commercial fortunes, over the years, hitting their peak of popularity with the smash success of their single “Ruthless queen”, a sizable European hit from their 1979 album, Phantom Of The Night.
Kayak disbanded in 1981, after their semi-conceptual Merlin and subsequent live album Eyewitness. Ton Scherpenzeel subsequently joined progressive rock legends Camel and contributed to their 1984 album Stationary Traveller, as well as to 1999's Rajaz.
Kayak reunited in 2000, releasing one of their best albums yet: Close to the Fire, with a guest appearance of Andrew Latimer of Camel. Being active ever since, Kayak released two further conceptual opuses: Merlin: Bard of the Unseen (an elaboration of their 1981 album) and Nostradamus: The Fate of Man.
In 2007 the band released the live CD KAYAKoustic, to return in 2008 with a new studio album called Coming Up For Air. The coinciding tour celebrated their 35th Anniversary.
Current line up: Ton Scherpenzeel (keyboards) Pim Koopman (drums) Edward Reekers (voc) Cindy Oudshoorn (voc) Joost Vergoossen (guitr) Rob Vunderink (voc, guitr) and Jan van Olffen (bass).
On 23 November 2009, drummer Pim Koopman unexpectedly died of sudden heart faillure...all concerts were cancelled for the remainder of 2009 and for 2010

Frozen Flame
Kayak Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Divine and fragrant, Intoxicating
The promise of life
Watching the world with an innocent soul
Moving so gently
As if dancing with God
She comes and wears a different dress
In a fountain of light
Touches the heart but never is what you've seen
Or am I mistaken
Is she more than a dream
Withing a dream
Morning tells its cruel tale
The winds have changed, the tide is turning
Her breath becomes a dying gale
Her voice a lonely echo in our ears
She planned her trick, her foul deceit
We all knew the ending
The snake and the apple
Just two pawns in her game
No moral no choice
Between and sinner and saint
Ashes to ashes, Only leaving a name, A frozen flame
The lyrics of Kayak’s “Frozen Flame” are enigmatic but profound in meaning as they depict the delicate balance of life, love, and loss. The beginning of the song creates imagery of a feminine and nurturing force, perhaps that of Mother Nature, who enfolds humans in her “sweet embrace” and offers the “promise of life”. The use of the word “divine” and “fragrant” add to the sacredness of the moment, and how the force is both captivating and intoxicating. The next line, “watching the world with an innocent soul” creates an oxymoron between the innocence of the force and the complexity of its influence on the world, further adding to the enigma of the song.
As the song progresses, the feminine force, like the changing of seasons, takes on a different form, always elusive and never what one has seen. The lines, “touches the heart but never is what you’ve seen”, and “Is she more than a dream withing a dream”, suggest that the feminine force is beyond human’s comprehension and knowledge, it is mystical, and perhaps even more, a being of nature rather than human.
However, in the end, the song takes a tragic turn, suggesting that the force had planned its own fall, like the Biblical character Eve, who brought about mortality to the human race with a bite of an apple. The force, in this case, is the “frozen flame”, once bright and alive, now gone, leaving nothing but ashes and a name. The lines, “No moral no choice between a sinner and saint”, suggest how humans are left with the burden of choices with no “sacred” force in control, as everything comes to an end, leaving humans alone to understand their own existence.

Incredibly great song from an incredibly great band. Kayak are the most underrated band in the world and I heard they wrote a song called that! They should have a whole lot more acknowledgement than they have. I can't believe they aren't famous.
