Teach Me
Keaton Henson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Teach me how to love you like I wrote
And say it like I mean it when I don't

Teach me how to hold you in my arms
Without squeezing too damn tight and causing harm

I'll learn not to look at you with scorn
If you promise to never have been born

By all means give me lessons in my ways
But damn it don't expect me to change

Mold me to the man that I should be
But don't consider that man to be free

How am I expected to behave?
When I'm alone with myself everyday

And I'll never love
You enough
My love

And I'll never hold
You close
Enough

Teach me how to love you like I wrote
And say it like I mean it when I don't

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Keaton Henson's "Teach Me" describe the struggles of the singer to love and communicate effectively with their partner. The opening line, "Teach me how to love you like I wrote," is a plea for guidance in expressing their love in a way that is genuine and heartfelt, rather than simply going through the motions. The second line, "And say it like I mean it when I don't," underscores the challenge of being able to truly articulate one's feelings.

The second verse focuses on physical intimacy, with the singer asking to be taught how to hold their partner without causing harm. The line "If you promise to never have been born" is a strikingly self-deprecating one, suggesting that the singer feels they are not worthy of their partner's affection.

The third verse acknowledges that the singer may need to change in order to be a better partner, while also expressing a fear of losing their sense of self in the process. The lines "But damn it don't expect me to change / Mold me to the man that I should be / But don't consider that man to be free" suggest a resistance to being transformed into someone else's ideal.

The final lines of the song, "And I'll never love / You enough / My love / And I'll never hold / You close / Enough / Teach me how to love you like I wrote / And say it like I mean it when I don't," capture the bittersweet feeling of never quite being able to fully express one's love, even as they continue to strive towards that goal.

Sometimes we need to stop feeding the side of us that destroys us, destroys a harmonious version of us. At times you have to forbid yourself from “celebrating your sadness” that eats you up from within. (Being a sensitive person myself, I know what it’s like when u can’t help but feeling what u feel and strangers tell you “u need this, u need that”, but that’s exactly why...)

And if I were your girlfriend I’d chop that beard off. Because in your case beard that long and that unruly doesn’t contribute to your style anyhow.
I’d force you to take the vitamins such as EPO (it’s Evening Primrose Oil that’s known for its benefits for the nervous system, it’s soothing and calming), the complex of group B vitamins (playing a vital role in the brain activity)...

I don’t believe in anti-depressants, especially in American.

Sorry to be v. straightforward. Sorry to leave a comment that doesn’t relate to the music. I know the world currently is so much more than just getting healthy by vitamin intake, but it’s better than doing nothing at all.

But... it’s just, you look as someone whose balance is broken.
-
P.S. Shouldn’t be leaving this message, I am not in a position to set an example, not being a “success” or at the happiest place currently myself.
