Hotline Bling
Kehlani & Charlie Puth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

You used to call me on my cell phone
Late night when you need my love
Call me on my cell phone
Late night when you need my love
And I know when that hotline bling
That can only mean one thing
And I know when that hotline bling
That can only mean one thing

Ever since I left the city you
Got a reputation for yourself now
Everybody knows and I feel left out
Girl you got me down, you got me stressed out
'Cause ever since I left the city, you
Started wearing less and goin' out more
Glasses of champagne out on the dance floor
Hangin' with some girls I've never seen before

You used to call me on my cell phone
Late night when you need my love
Call me on my cell phone
Late night when you need my love
And I know when that hotline bling
That can only mean one thing
And I know when that hotline bling
That can only mean one thing

Ever since I left the city, you, you, you
You and me we just don't get along
You make me feel like I did you wrong
Going places where you don't belong
Ever since I left the city, you
You got exactly what you asked for
Running out of pages on your passport
Hanging with some girls I never seen before

You used to call me on my cell phone
Late night when you need my love
Call me on my cell phone
Late night when you need my love
And I know when that hotline bling
That can only mean one thing
And I know when that hotline bling
That can only mean one thing

Call me on my

Overall Meaning

cell phone when you need my love, the opening line of "Hotline Bling," conveys the idea that the singerโ€™s ex-girlfriend only contacts him when she needs his love, specifically late at night when she is lonely. It suggests that the relationship is transactional and that she only reaches out for physical intimacy.

The chorus, "And I know when that hotline bling, that can only mean one thing" indicates that the singer is well aware of the true intentions behind his ex's calls. The phrase "one thing" here refers to her desire for physical intimacy, which is the only thing that she contacts him for.

The second half of the song discusses how the singerโ€™s ex-girlfriend has moved on and is now thriving without him. The lyrics, "Ever since I left the city, you got a reputation for yourself now. Everybody knows and I feel left out," imply that the ex-girlfriend has become more confident and self-assured and that the singer feels as though he was left behind.

Overall, the song conveys a sense of loss, longing, and emotional detachment, reflecting its sad and melancholic mood.

She has truly been one of the new voices
amongst these young singers I really do respect. Great tone and clear as a whistle. But if we are talking about some of the great singers of today I admire I would include the following: Tori Kelly, Ariana Grande, Tamar Braxton, Kehlani, Jazmine Sullivan to name the cream of the the vocal crop :D

I remember listening to this for the first time when they released it on SoundCloud back in 2015 ๐Ÿ˜ญ This makes me feel so nostalgic. I would play this during late night long-distance drives with my best friend riding shotgun.

I LOVE their version of this song! I cannot stop listening to it. His voice makes me melt and hers is amazing! They sound really good together. Drake's dance moves are just funny to watch.
