MONUMENT
Keiino Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where do we go when it's over?
How do you trace our life in time
When the snow comes in October?
What do we leave behind?

Crying, loving, dancing, fighting
All of this time
All of this time

In your voice
I feel it coming back to me
Like a shadow whisper in the night
Like a monument
To all the time we spent
A minor symphony

In your voice
I hear the sound of history
Like a monument
To all the time we spent
A minor symphony

What if we are never-ending
If we are more than dust and sand?
I will flow back down the river
Where you first held my hand

Min bálgat leat báhzan
Vaikko massan mii leat min giissa
Go cohkon dat leat min jogat
De dollagáttis mun cippostan

In your voice
I feel it coming back to me
Like a shadow whisper in the night
Like a monument
To all the time we spent
A minor symphony

Oh, one last time
Like a monument
To all the time we spent
A minor symphony

Visot máid don oainnat
Lea vássan áigi hápmen
Ja visot maid don gulat
L ea ivttabeaivve skádja

Oh, one last time
Thunder, Gloria
One last time
Thunder and Gloria
Thunder and Gloria

Like a monument
To all the time we spent
A minor symphony

Oh, one last time

Like a monument
To all the time we spent

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Keiino's song Monument describe the contemplation of the end of a relationship and the question of what is left behind after it is over. The first verse asks where one goes when it's over and how can one trace their life in time. The mention of snow coming in October adds to the melancholic tone, as the lyrics portray a feeling of sadness and finality. The chorus repeats the phrase "in your voice" and likens it to a monument, representing the memories that are left behind after a relationship ends. The lyrics suggest that the memories and experiences shared in the relationship are a "minor symphony" that can be remembered through the sound of one's voice.

The second verse questions the possibility of an afterlife and suggests that if it does exist, the singer will go back to where the relationship began. The bridge contains lyrics in Sami, a language spoken in parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. This adds to the song's uniqueness, as it is a blend of different cultures and languages. The final chorus adds the lines "Thunder, Gloria" which are repeated several times, emphasizing the intense emotions that are felt when a relationship is coming to an end.

Overall, the lyrics of Monument paint a picture of nostalgia, regret, and reflection. It is a song that captures the feeling of looking back on a relationship and the memories shared within it, and the fact that these memories can be both painful and beautiful at the same time.

Keiino has to win! <3 This song goes VERY deep into emotions - heritage - memories. Living in the Arctic is very hard. The sami part is what Fred was told by his late grandfather. Wise words <3
Translation Sámi rap part:
"Our paths are still visible
Even though we’ve lost our legacy
When the rivers have run dry
I’ll be kneeling by the abandoned fireplace"

Translation Sámi whispering part:
"Everything you see
Is created by the past
Everything you hear
Is the echo of yesterday"

And what people are showed by Fred in the official video, is how some of the Sami people live - alongside with their herd of reindeers. They move around together most of the year. And then the people live in tents (a lavvo) in the wilderness.
