How Can I Keep From Singing?
Keith & Kristyn Getty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My life flows on in endless song
Above earth's lamentation
I hear the sweet though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation
Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear that music ringing
It finds an echo in my soul
How can I keep from singing?

While though my joys and comforts die
I know my Savior liveth
While though the darkness gather round
Songs in the night He giveth
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that refuge, clinging
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?

I lift my eyes, the cloud grows thin
I see the blue above it
And day by day, this pathway smooths
Since first I learned to love it
The peace of Christ makes fresh, my heart
A fountain ever springing
All things are mine, since I am His
How can I keep from singing?

The peace of Christ makes fresh, my heart
A fountain ever springing

All things are mine, since I am His
How can I keep from singing?

Overall Meaning

In the song "How Can I Keep From Singing?" by Keith and Kristyn Getty, the lyrics open with a poignant declaration of resilience amid life's struggles. The phrase "My life flows on in endless song" suggests that the singer's existence is intrinsically tied to a melody, a source of consistent joy and hope even in the face of adversity. The term "earth's lamentation" evokes a deep sense of sorrow and mourning prevalent in the world, yet the singer maintains a perspective that transcends this anguish. They listen for "the sweet though far-off hymn," which symbolizes a promise of redemption and the anticipation of a brighter future that heralds a "new creation." This juxtaposition of chaos and a distant melody serves to underscore the theme of faith as a source of comfort and strength, indicating that, regardless of tumult, the singer's soul resonates with a profound sense of hope. The rhetorical question "How can I keep from singing?" reflects an inner compulsion to express joy and gratitude despite external troubles.

As the lyrics unfold, the singer acknowledges the inevitability of loss and despair when they sing, "While though my joys and comforts die." This line encapsulates the notion that life's transient nature often leads to the fading of happiness and stability. Yet, centered in their faith, the singer assures themselves with the conviction that “my Savior liveth,” underscoring an unwavering belief in the sustaining power of a divine presence. The imagery of darkness closing in contrasts with the “songs in the night” provided by their Savior, suggesting that even in dire circumstances, spiritual solace can manifest as music that lifts the spirit. The line "No storm can shake my inmost calm" reinforces this theme, portraying an inner peace that is unwavering, akin to a refuge that the singer clings to amidst turmoil. Here, the lyrics imbue a powerful reminder of the strength derived from faith—an acknowledgment that Christ's sovereignty over "heaven and earth" bolsters their resolve to sing praises regardless of life's storms.

Transitioning from the trials and tribulations of life, the song shifts to a vision of hope and clarity: "I lift my eyes, the cloud grows thin." This metaphor represents a moment of revelation and transcendence where doubt and despair recede to reveal a clearer perspective—the "blue above it." As the singer continues to navigate life's journey, they express a gradual smoothing of their path, indicating a transformation that occurs from the moment they embraced love and faith. This progression also alludes to spiritual growth, where the trials that once felt insurmountable now lead to enlightenment and serenity. The "peace of Christ" acts as a rejuvenating force—compared to a "fountain ever springing," suggesting that this inner calm is both nourishing and ever-present. This imagery paints faith not merely as a set of beliefs but as a living and dynamic source of sustaining grace.

In the final lines, the repetition of the phrases "the peace of Christ makes fresh, my heart" and "all things are mine, since I am His" serves to drive home the theme of abundant grace and belonging that the singer experiences through their faith. This affirmation speaks to the interconnectedness of faith, identity, and belonging—a realization that their connection to Christ encompasses all aspects of their life. It emphasizes an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the blessings that abound, suggesting that the very act of singing is a response to the joy and peace that Christ brings. Ultimately, the rhetorical question echoes once more, reasserting an existential wonder—how could one refrain from expressing such profound joy? The lyrics invite listeners to reflect on their own sources of strength and the music that exists within, even amidst adversity, forging a path toward hope and unreserved praise.

There are few things as beautiful as a mother who shares her faith with her children. You were blessed and continue to be blessed by your mom. May she rest in the peace of Jesus.

Marlyn Olitao - Hi. I'm thinking you meant to type 'broken' - not brocken. If so, my heart goes out to you! God bless your mom who was called home. Kids grow up & make their own choices, but your mom pointed her children in the direction of God & Jesus & the Holy Spirit & may God grant her crowns in heaven for it!

How can anyone look at the beauty and complexity of Earth alone and say there is no God?

@alexandreperusio1303

They can, but only with a blatant lie and a seared conscience.

@mrgreyman3358

They honestly know there is a God, they just think that by saying there isn't, they have a loophole to get out of judgement day.
Atheist lawyer told me that.

@sannhetiblodet2813

They just don’t want to believe in God, so they deceive themselves.
