Shapes In My Mind
Keith Relf Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Shapes in my mind, my eyes are closed
The colours cry, my brain explodes
My body shrinks into my head
I must have help or I'll be dead

Please

You've got to make me break this spell
You've got to give me all your help
You've got to stop my spinning brain
You've got to be with me again

I see your face, I see your smile
I see the eyes that used to cry
I see the lips I used to kiss
I can't forget
I see you standing all alone
I see the things that I did wrong
I see I didn't try enough
To give you love

The love you gave and left behind
Has dropped and burned inside my mind
I can't see out, I can't see in
I know I'm lost, I can't explain

The pain I felt is here again
I've nothing left, I this the end?

I see your face, I see your smile
I see the eyes that used to cry
I see the lips I used to kiss
I can't forget
I see you standing all alone
I see the things that I did wrong

I see I didn't try enough
To give you love

Overall Meaning

The song "Shapes in My Mind" by Keith Relf is a lamentation on lost love and loneliness. The opening lines of the song, "Shapes in my mind, my eyes are closed/The colours cry, my brain explodes," indicate a state of confusion and turmoil. The singer's mind is filled with a mixture of memories, regrets, and emotions, all of which are muddled together into a chaotic mess. In this state, the singer feels lost and detached from reality, as if his body has "shrunk into [his] head" and he's in danger of being consumed by his own thoughts.

Throughout the song, the singer implores someone to help him break free from this spell of sadness and confusion. He calls out for someone to "stop [his] spinning brain" and begs them to "be with [him] again." The person the singer is addressing appears to be someone who was once close to him, as he can see their face, smile, and eyes in his mind. However, this person is no longer with him, and the singer is tormented by the mistakes he made in their relationship. He sees "the things that [he] did wrong" and realizes that he "didn't try enough/To give [them] love."

The song is a heartfelt plea for help from someone who is lost and alone. Its vivid imagery and emotional intensity capture the experience of heartbreak and the search for a way out of it. The repetition of certain phrases, such as "I see your face, I see your smile," underscores the singer's obsession with his former partner, while the urgent tone of the song emphasizes his desperate need for assistance.

Always liked Keith Relf and the Yardbirds. Felt he was an incredible frontman with a voice that could cover a wide range of music. I'm sorry he left us too soon. RIP Keith and thanks for the legacy!

I think his work with ARMAGEDDON was the height of his creativity.

I once had a DJ copy of this on the green Columbia label. I had no idea it also came out on Epic. The B side is session musicians with Simon Napier Bell on harp. Keith does not play on that side.

@barrympls

This is the US only complete remix and re-edit of the British single and the first edition of the US single.
