That's Life
Keith and Renee Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The walls are cracked but the window's got a view
I see the neighbor's daughter waiting for a streetcar
The dress she's wearing is reminding me of you
I've got you on my mind
It's just gonna take some time
I was gonna be your Romeo adorer
I remember playing music on your front porch
We don't even get together anymore
What went wrong with you and I?
It's just gonna take some time
But that's life
The air soaks up memories of you
It's all I have to get me through
It's true
It'll do
The lyrics to Keith and Renee's song "That's Life" paint a picture of a person sitting alone in their apartment, reflecting on a lost love. The cracks in the walls and the neighbor's daughter waiting for a streetcar outside serve as reminders of the person's past relationship. The mention of Romeo and Juliet alludes to the idea of a great romance that never came to fruition. The singer reminisces about playing music on their lover's front porch in the past, wondering what went wrong. Despite the pain of loss, the singer accepts that time will be needed to move on and ultimately, that's life. The memories of the lost love are all they have left and they'll have to make do with that.
The theme of lost love is a common thread in music and "That's Life" is no exception. The song was written by Keith Macpherson of the Canadian folk-pop duo Keith and Renee. It was included on their 2010 album "The Great Unknown". The song has a melancholic tone, with thoughtful lyrics and soft acoustic guitar strumming. Interestingly, the song was written in just 20 minutes during a songwriting session with another songwriter, Ryan Stewart. The pair wrote the song while waiting for a flight at the airport.
