Kelis & Andre 3000 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I said, her from the city
So her got to be witty, witty
She said, him from the country
So him got to be funky, funky

Mama, I'm a millionaire, but I feel like a bum
Mama, I'm a millionaire, but I feel like the only one
I, I, I, I woke up early this morning
I don't think y'all heard me
I woke up early this morning
I don't think y'all heard me
I woke up early this morning
I don't think, think y'all heard me
I woke up early this morning, but I still ain't see the sun

Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh

Papa, I'm a millionaire, but Saks Fifth Ave. don't sell affection
Saks Fifth Ave. don't sell affection
Papa, I'm a millionaire, but I ain't moving in the right direction
Something ain't right, I know
I ain't rich, til he is rich, and she is rich, then we is rich oh
I ain't rich, til he is rich, and she is rich, then we is rich
I ain't rich, til he is rich, and she is rich, then we is rich
I ain't rich, til he is rich, and she is rich, then we is rich, mmmm

Where there is cheese there are rats
Where ever there are rats there are cats
Where ever there are cats there are dogs
If you got the dogs, you got bitches
Bitches always out to put their paws on your riches
If you got riches, you got glitches
If you got glitches in your life computer, turn it off
And then reboot it, now you back on
Can't just put the cap on the old bottle
Once you pop it, that will spoil it
Go on and drink it and enjoy it, uh
Mama, I'm a millionaire

What's a girl to do when she just has dimes
No time, just pay-ay-ay-ay
What's a girl to do instead of me
It's you, be true-ue-ue-ue
What's a girl to do in a world of greed
But kneel and pray-ay-ay-ay
What's a girl to do when she's lost her long time friends
That's li-i-i-i-ife

I, I'm feeling sad like a million bucks
I, I, I, I, I, I'm feeling sad like a million
I, I, I'm feeling sad like a million

Sad like a million
I, I, I, I, I, I'm feeling sad

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Kelis and Andre 3000's "Millionaire" are a commentary on the complexities and contradictions of wealth and success. The first verse highlights the idea of contrasting backgrounds and expectations within a relationship. The woman from the city is expected to be witty, while the man from the country is expected to be funky. These stereotypes are then subverted by the chorus, where Kelis sings "Mama, I'm a millionaire, but I feel like a bum." The chorus repeats, with Kelis and Andre 3000 describing the feeling of being rich but unsatisfied, and disconnected from others. The line "Papa, I'm a millionaire, but Saks Fifth Ave. don't sell affection" is especially poignant, underscoring the idea that money cannot buy love or emotional fulfillment.

The second half of the song introduces a cynical take on wealth and the people it attracts. The verse "Where there is cheese there are rats, where ever there are rats there are cats" implies that successful people must constantly be on guard against those who would take advantage of them. The chorus then switches focus to the idea that wealth only truly matters if it is shared, with the repeated line "I ain't rich, til he is rich, and she is rich, then we is rich." The song ends with a series of questions and observations about the challenges of wealth and success, and the difficulty of finding happiness in a world obsessed with money.

These lyrics just hit different during this time we're living through, this song was years ahead of its time. At the time I thought it was a banger and still do, but these lyrics! "I know I ain't rich, 'til he is rich, 'til she rich, and we is rich"? "No time, just pay"? Damn. Criminally underrated.

@vhsuniverse2624

idk if u listen to kelis religiously, but her song called ghetto children is also criminally underrated and timeless. Check it out if you havent

@saritamilla9177

Not really ahead of the time. That sentiment is timeless. Valid from prehistory all the way far into the future.

@vhsuniverse2624

@@saritamilla9177 i think they just mean that it can be enjoyed today as though it was made for today's style. Obviously, some of the foundations to today's music whether one agrees or not, but didnt receive much recognition.

@cali22boi

@@vhsuniverse2624 wasn't that written by Pharrell Williams?

@feeniix6
