And I
Kelli Mack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm as black as the night
I hide out in corners pretending I'm alright
I could say that I'm free
That's just one of my lies
I'm a slave to what can be

PRE-CHORUS
It's not long before the apple's not so sweet
Not long before I realize
I'm tangled in this web I weave

CHORUS:
You're the only one
Who would cover me with mercy
Wrap me in the blanket of your love
And you're the one
Who burns the record of my wrongs
And make me strong
You are the one

I'm the only one who knows
That I'm rotten inside from my head to toes
I cheat and I lie
If misery's for sale then I'm looking to buy

Repeat Pre-chorus
Repeat Chorus

There's a darkness I keep
It feeds on my soul and it won't go to sleep
It shies away from the light
So my shadows and secrets stay tucked out of sight

Repeat Pre-chorus
Repeat Chorus

You are the only one
The only one

Overall Meaning

In Kelli Mack's song "And I", the singer talks about her struggles with herself, her inner demons, and her longing for someone who could understand her and help her overcome her predicaments. She describes her state of mind with the lyrics, "I'm as black as the night, I hide out in corners pretending I'm alright". From this line, we can understand that she feels lost and alone in the world, hiding her true self from others. Despite her feelings of self-destruction, she acknowledges the fact that she is a slave to her desires and seeks to overcome them.

The pre-chorus talks about the consequences of her actions, stating that eventually, the apple will not be so sweet, and she will realize she is tangled in a web of her own making. It is a metaphor for how her self-destructive behaviors will catch up with her sooner or later. Despite this, she continues to deceive herself with lies and buy into the misery that she thinks will bring her peace.

In the chorus, the singer begs for help from an unknown figure who could "cover her with mercy" and "wrap her in the blanket of love". She asks for forgiveness from this person as she describes her wrongdoings as a record that they could burn. She yearns to be strong like this person and wishes that they could be the only one to understand her and help her overcome her problems.

I remember "Kelli Macks" release on Kenniki Records on a compilation with other artist and went to the release party with all performers. Her tracks we fire but meeting her wasn't pleasant. She was not a nice person whatsoever. I believe that's why her music never went anywhere. Humbleness can take you many places.
