Reflections
Kelly Chen & Coco Lee Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You may think you see
Who I really am
But you'll never know me
Every day
It's as if I play a part
Now I see
If I wear a mask
But I cannot fool my heart
Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?
I am now
In a world where I have to hide my heart
And what I believe in
But somehow
I will show the world what's inside my heart
And be loved for who I am
Who is that girkl Isee
Staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection
Someone I don't know?
Must I pretend I'm
Someone else for all time?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?
There's a heart that must be free to fly
That burns with a need to know the reason why
Why must we all conceal
What we think?
How we feel?
Must there be a secret me
I'm forced to hide?
I won't pretend that I'm
Someone else
For all time
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?
The song "Reflection" by Kelly Chen & Coco Lee is a powerful reflection on the idea of self-discovery and the struggle to show the world one's true self. The first verse talks about the façade that people put up every day, pretending to be someone they are not, in order to please others. It highlights the fact that, even though people can deceive the world with their masks, they cannot lie to themselves. The chorus, "Who is that girl I see...When will my reflection show who I am inside?" is a poignant representation of the confusion and frustration of not being able to express one's true self.
The second verse delves deeper into this struggle, talking about how one is forced to hide their heart and beliefs in a world that doesn't always accept authenticity. However, it also highlights the hope that someday, the world will accept one's true self and love them for who they are. The bridge of the song is a plea for people to be able to express themselves freely without fear of rejection. It is a call for people to be true to themselves and for society to embrace this authenticity.
Overall, "Reflection" is a beautiful and heartfelt exploration of the struggle to find one's true identity and the courage to present it to the world.

Look at me
Pay attention to me
You may think you see
You might have an opinion about me
Who I really am
My true identity
But you'll never know me
You can't truly know me
Every day
On a daily basis
It's as if I play a part
It seems like I'm acting
Now I see
I understand now
If I wear a mask
If I hide my true self
I can fool the world
I can deceive everyone else
But I cannot fool my heart
But I can't deceive myself
Who is that girl I see
Who is the girl I'm looking at
Staring straight back at me?
Looking directly at me
When will my reflection show
When will my true self be revealed
Who I am inside?
My inner self, my true identity
I am now
I exist in the present time
In a world where I have to hide my heart
In a society where I can't be myself
And what I believe in
And what I have faith in
But somehow
But I think
I will show the world what's inside my heart
I'll reveal my true self to the world
And be loved for who I am
And be accepted for who I truly am
Why is my reflection
Why does my true self
Someone I don't know?
Seem unfamiliar to me?
Must I pretend I'm
Do I have to feign to be
Someone else for all time?
Someone other than myself forever?
There's a heart that must be free to fly
There's an inner self that needs to be set free
That burns with a need to know the reason why
That has a burning desire to know the reason
Must there be a secret me
Do I have to keep a hidden self
I'm forced to hide?
That I don't have the liberty to reveal?
I won't pretend that I'm
I'll no longer act like I'm
Someone else for all time
Someone other than myself forever
When will my reflection show
When will my true self be shown
Who I am inside?
My inner self, my true identity
When will my reflection show
When will my true self be revealed
Who I am inside?
My inner self, my true identity

I speak Cantonese and it sometimes sounds so gutteral and loud when spoken. When sung, it's damn beautiful. :)

Actually Kelly sings 3 versions of "Reflection"~ One has the same lyrics as this one, but the music is in more Chinese style. This one was resung in 2006 using different music. The third version is in the movie, which the music and the lyrics are both different from this one. But all 3 version are perfect!! Kelly sings so well~!!
