I'll Be Home for Christmas
Kelly Clarkson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll be home for Christmas
You can count on me
Please have snow and, and mistletoe
And presents under the tree

Christmas Eve will find you
Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams

Oh
Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams

Well, I'll be home for, for Christmas
If only in my dreams

Overall Meaning

Kelly Clarkson's rendition of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" captures the emotional journey of a person who is separated from loved ones during the holidays. The song is popularly performed across different generations in America due to its melancholic lyrics that evoke a sense of longing and nostalgia. The singer pledges to come home for the holidays despite the distance between her and her loved ones. Although she acknowledges the possibility that her dream may not come true, she still cherishes the hope of reuniting with her family and experiencing the warmth of the holiday season.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the importance of the little things that make Christmas special, such as snow, mistletoe, and presents under the tree. These items evoke the sensory experiences of the Christmas season, reminding listeners of the holiday joy that they may miss while being away from home. The second verse expresses the heart-wrenching thoughts of a person as they imagine their loved ones celebrating Christmas without them. The central theme of the song reinforces the idea that the holiday is not only about physical presence but also emotional connections and the importance of being present in each other's hearts.

I'm dreaming tonight of a place I love
Even more than I usually do
And although I know it's a long road back
I promise you

I'll be home for Christmas
You can count on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents by the tree

Christmas eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams

I'll be home for Christmas
You can count on me
Please have some snow and mistletoe
And presents by the tree

Christmas eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams
If only in my dreams

It was 1967, two days before Christmas. My unit was on some God forsaken hilltop in Vietnam. It was drizzling rain. Somewhere in the distance we could hear this song playing. Never did know if it was the radio or a record player. All of those rough, tough GI's had a far away look in their eyes and most of them had wet eyes but not from the rain.

I still get far that away feeling in my gut when I hear this song.

Same thing happened to my coworker. He's in his early 60s now. He told me a story about when he joined the navy at 17 years old. He got shipped to Japan spent Christmas there. So, when he heard this song, him being away from home for the first time and so far away, at 17 years old, being a bit lonely... He went out and drank the night away.

My fiancé proposed on Christmas Eve. This song started to play before he got down on one knee. I will always remember this version of the song! ❤
