And all I remember is your back
Walking towards the airport, leaving us all in your past
I travelled fifteen hundred miles to see you
Begged you to want me, but you didn’t want to

But piece by piece, he collected me up
Off the ground, where you abandoned things and
Piece by piece he filled the holes that you burned in me
Six years old and you know
He never walks away
He never asks for money
He takes care of me
He loves me
Piece by piece, he restored my faith
That a man can be kind and the Father could, stay

And all of your words fall flat
I made something of myself and now you wanna come back
But your love, it isn’t free, it has to be earned
Back then I didn’t have anything you needed so I was worthless

But piece by piece, he collected me up
Off the ground, where you abandoned things and
Piece by piece he filled the holes that you burned in me
Six years old and you know
He never walks away
He never asks for money
He takes care of me
'Cause he loves me
Piece by piece, he restored my faith
That a man can be kind and a father could, stay

Piece by piece I fell far from the tree
I will never leave her like you left me
And she will never have to wonder her worth
Because unlike you I’m going to put her first and you know
He’ll never walk away,
He’ll never break her heart
He’ll take care of things, he’ll love her
Piece by piece, he restored my faith
That a man can be kind and the Father should be great

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Kelly Clarkson's song Piece by Piece tell a deeply personal and emotional story of abandonment, hurt, and healing. The song reflects on the experiences of a child whose father walked out on the family and left them to pick up the pieces. The singer recalls memories of begging her father to want her, only to be met with rejection and the painful feeling of worthlessness. However, the song also speaks to the healing power of love and the transformative effect it can have on one's life.

The lyrics describe how, despite her father's abandonment, the singer found love and support in her husband, who picked up the pieces of her broken heart and restored her faith in the goodness of men. The metaphor of "piece by piece" emphasizes the painstaking effort that it took for the singer's husband to collect all the broken pieces of her heart and put them back together again. The song speaks to the power of love to heal past traumas and to create a sense of safety and security in one's life.

Don’t know why I put myself through this again at 7.20am 😅 but seeing it again I actually want to applaud the pianist for adjusting the music when Kelly needed a second. Brilliant skills ❤

I was literally going to say this and was checking to see if anyone else noticed too

Jason Halbert the pianist is an absolute masterpieces. He has been playing piano with Kelly for 20 years. They are magic together and he has always instinctively known how to follow her timing.

You know the part where you’re trying to catch your breath from crying hard, this song does it every time. I feel every emotion in that even though I’ve never had anything like that happen to me. My kids have, but they have an amazing stepdad that has taken all that pain away and shown them what love should be from a father. Hugs to anyone out there that has had this story she tells so beautifully.
