My grandma sang this to us all the time as children. I had a book with voice recording made for her with this song from my boys before she passed. I was born with deafness and tinnitus, my Grandmother Fannie used to sing this song and hold my head against her chest to feel the vibration of her voice. My deafness was corrected with surgery. What I learned about my Grandmother was her first husband died in a mining accident when she was 19 and left widowed with an infant. I honestly believed she sang this song about him.
