After finishing high school, Kem dealt with homelessness, addiction, and isolation from his family. He did not overcome these issues until he turned to spirituality and music, as he has said, "My career didn't take off until I connected with my spirituality. That's why I take time on stage and on the album to administer spirituality to people. That's one of the things that I am most proud of." He has also stated that he does not create music marketed to the mainstream hip-hop-dominated R&B crowd but to people who enjoy his soul/jazz adult contemporary sound and lyrical content. He wrote, produced, and financed his self-released debut album, Kemistry, by singing in a wedding band and waiting tables. He was later signed by Motown Records, who re-released the album on February 25, 2003. The album's first single, "Love Calls", became a hit at urban adult contemporary and smooth jazz radio. He followed his debut release with a sophomore album, Album II, released May 17, 2005. It included the hit single "I Can't Stop Loving You", a #1 at urban adult contemporary radio, and the song "You Might Win" featuring Stevie Wonder on harmonica.

You sure do treat me nice
Merry Christmas baby
You sure do treat me nice ,yes you do
You bought me a diamond ring for Christmas now
I'm living in paradise
I'm feeling mighty fine
Got good music on my radio
Got good music on my radio babe
And I wanna kiss you baby
Stand beneath the mistletoe yeah right here
Santa came down the chimmney
By one half passed through
Of all these groovy presents that you see before me girl
Merry Christmas baby
Sure been good to me
I ain't had a drink this morning
But I'm lit up like a Christmas tree

The singer then talks about the gift that his lover bought for him, a diamond ring, and how it made his life feel like paradise. This is an indication of how powerful love can be, making it possible for the singer to have a joyful and happy life during Christmas.
The pre-chorus then transitions into the singer talking about his joy and excitement during the festive season. The good music on his radio also indicates how music can make people feel good during the holiday season. The desire to kiss his lover beneath the mistletoe is a typical romantic gesture that is often associated with Christmas. The chorus repeats the same lines that express gratitude to the lover for being good to the singer during Christmas.
The lyrics "Santa came down the chimney, by one half past through, of all these groovy presents that you see before me girl" are an indication of how much the lover has provided for the singer during the festive season. The singer expresses how contented he is with the presents that he has received, the good music playing on his radio, and the love of his life. The last verse, "I ain't had a drink this morning, but I'm lit up like a Christmas tree," shows how the singer is overwhelmed with joy and excitement during Christmas, and he does not need alcohol to feel good.
