Do It All
Kendrick Lamar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everyday I try to escape the realities of this world
So I tell a disc jockey "press play" while I press up on a girl
In a mist that I smoke in the air
The reflection of lights that glare
She'll be out of control like a hydroplane in plain sight I might have to stare
And that's power steering, a power trip will see my appearance
Pile of hundreds all on a prowl like vampires in the darkest dungeon
Speakers bumpin', drinks is pouring
We in the house, we paid the mortgage, tyrannosaurus
That's real big, pop my color, pop that lid

Flashin' lights, model types, vixen show me much love
Put the bottles on that ice, drink like we supposed to
Fire burning, heads is turning, all I see is energy
So eventually we'll do this till the sun come up (the sun)
We'll do this till the sun come up (the sun)
Smoke like this till the sun come up (the sun)
We'll do this till the moon is dropping day break watching
Then do it again

Some people stay home and sleep, me I go out at night
All seven days of the week, I live the party life
I got my dogs with me, you can bring some of your friends
We going hard till the sun come up and do it again
I got a drink in my hand they playing my favourite song
This girl that's dancing on me ain't' got no panties on
And she gonna come back to my hotel, don't tell
Anyone about us, I'm here to party all night

Flashin' lights, model types, vixen show me much love
Put the bottles on that ice, drink like we supposed to
Fire burning, heads is turning, all I see is energy
So eventually we'll do this till the sun come up (the sun)
We'll do this till the sun come up (the sun)
Smoke like this till the sun come up (the sun)
We'll do this till the moon is dropping day break watching
Then do it again

Come to my section (my section)
And down some of this liquor
Then tell me what it hit for
Gon be some things I don't remember
So take some camera phone pictures

Come to my section (my section)
And down some of this liquor
Then tell me what it hit for
Gon be some things I don't remember
So take some camera phone pictures

Flashin' lights, model types, vixen show me much love
Put the bottles on that ice, drink like we supposed to
Fire burning, heads is turning, all I see is energy
So eventually we'll do this till the sun come up (the sun)
We'll do this till the sun come up (the sun)
Smoke like this till the sun come up (the sun)

We'll do this till the moon is dropping day break watching
Then do it again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Kendrick Lamar's "Do It Again" describe a night out with friends, where they go hard till the sun comes up, drink excessively, party and by the end of it all, memories start slipping away. Kendrick and his friends seem to be living in the moment, trying to escape reality for a while by indulging in the pleasures of life. They do so by drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, dancing with random girls, and taking pictures to remember something of the night they are going to forget.

Kendrick Lamar's verses reveal his inclination towards getting lost in the thrill of the moment, trying to forget the weight of the world on his shoulders, at least for a few hours. The chorus, however, is more about the collective experience, capturing the energy and the adrenaline of the night out with a group of friends.

In short, the lyrics speak to the universal need to cut loose and let loose, even if it's just for one night in our otherwise mundane lives.

King T'challa has died
Now I know he is Chadwick Boseman, the actor who brought a quiet dignity and slow-burning intensity to the Jackie Robinson story. And the drive and will to survive to the James Brown story that both humanized and showed the depth and deprivation of James Brown the man, the human being.

I've have been trying to piece together WHY Chadwick Boseman's death, at such a young age, has gutted me so. I mean I did not know him, personally, but I knew him. He embodied the dream.

He took an adult kid who loves superheroes to a world where people who look like me had never been stuffed in the hull of slave ships laying head to feet in their own filth, filled with terror. A world where we had never been bridled like beast to work in the hot sun. A world where our children had never been taken from us like puppies never to know the name, the face, or smell of their parents, like my great, great grandfather.

He took us to a place where our lives had always mattered and our narrative was not a forgotten aside but the center of the story. When the lights in the theater went dark and we saw Wakanda we saw a world we could only dream about. Not because of its futuristic look or it's amazing vibranium but because it was a world in which our intellect, our beauty our flourishing was still intact. Where we had never known the fear of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The humiliation of being forced off the street and sent in the back door. A world where we were the good guys and the bad guys, a world where we were free and human and that world was fucking fantasy.

And so that's why Chadwick Boseman's death has gutted me so. And I am gutted because his young beautiful, smart black life has ended too soon. I feel for his family and friends and for all of us. I am also angered that the filthy mouth of hate continues to spew in this world while Chadwick's light is transformed into the plane of the ancestors. And I pray that it is true that, "all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose."

WAKANDA FOREVER AND EVER
