Gonzales started his DJ career in 1985 organizing neighborhood block parties in his home of Brooklyn, New York, with his then musical partner, Mike Delgado. Under the Masters at Work moniker, the parties became quite successful and attracted Todd Terry who later borrowed the group's name for two record releases. Terry returned the favor at a later date when he loaned Gonzalez a drum machine, which began his interest in producing beats.
Get On Down
Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez Lyrics

And I ask myself why
I'm walking in rhythm to a new beat
Must be the look in your eye
Get down
You are my music fill me up
Here I am
Ooh ooh yeah yeah
This is unusual
It's not like me
To be acting this way
I'm talking in riddles and poetry
No one understands what I say
Get down
You are my music fill me up
Here I am
Keep it spinning till we drop
I don't know why I gotta boogie
Could it be your standing by me
Everything I see so shiny now
Get down
You are my music fill me up
Here I am
Keep it spinning till we drop
Ooh ooh yeah yeah
The lyrics to Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez's song Get on Down describe the feeling of being in love and how it can completely transform a person's demeanor. The singer is skipping along the street and suddenly realizes that they are walking in rhythm to a new beat. They attribute this change to the look in their lover's eyes. They can't help but feel overtaken by the music of love that this person brings into their life. They implore their lover to "Get Down" and continue to fill them up with their music.
The singer acknowledges that they are not acting like themselves; they are talking in riddles and poetry that no one else can understand. This seems to be a natural byproduct of being in love - the emotions are so intense and overwhelming that they cannot be put into words that others can comprehend. They express their confusion at why they "gotta boogie," but recognize that it's likely because their lover is standing by them, making everything they see shine a little bit brighter.
Overall, the song is an upbeat and fun tribute to the power of love and music to completely transform a person's life. It encourages listeners to let go and enjoy the moment, spinning until they drop.
