Burrell made his first recording in 1951, with Dizzy Gillespie. After moving from Detroit to New York City in 1956, he recorded with a wide range of prominent musicians, including John Coltrane, Benny Goodman, Gil Evans, Stan Getz, Billie Holiday, Milt Jackson, Quincy Jones, Oscar Peterson, Sonny Rollins, Jimmy Smith, Stanley Turrentine, and Cedar Walton. He also led his own groups since 1951.
In the 1970s he began leading seminars about music, particularly Duke Ellington's (Burrell has a music degree from Wayne State University). A highly popular performer, he has won several jazz polls in Japan and the United Kingdom as well as the United States.
He has recorded about 40 LPs, including Midnight Blue (1961), Blue Lights, Guitar Forms, Sunup To Sundown (1990), Soft Winds (1993), Then Along Came Kenny (1993), and Lotus Blossom (1995).
Burrell now serves as Director of Jazz Studies at UCLA.
Weaver of Dreams
Kenny Burrell Lyrics

You and your strange fascination
You're a weaver of dreams
You and your come-hither smile
Just to hear you speak
Can leave me weak as a babe in arms
Poor little babe in arms
For you're a weaver of dreams
You and your lips warm and tender
Just like magic it seems
Thrilling, enchanting me too
I'm in your spell and there's no cure
I'm lost for sure
`Cause you're a weaver of dreams
And I'm in love with you.
(You're a weaver of dreams
You and your strange fascination
You're a weaver of dreams
You and your come hither smile)
I'm in your spell and there's no cure
I'm lost for sure
`Cause you're a weaver of dreams
And I'm in love with you.
(You're a weaver of dreams,
You're a weaver of dreams)
The song "Weaver of Dreams" by Kenny Burrell is a romantic ballad about a person who is captivated by the charm and allure of their lover. The lyrics suggest that the subject of the song has an intoxicating effect on the singer, causing them to feel weak and helpless in their presence. This is conveyed through lines such as "Just to hear you speak, can leave me weak as a babe in arms" and "For you're a weaver of dreams, and I'm in love with you."
The metaphor of a "weaver of dreams" is used throughout the song, implying that the lover has the ability to create a fantasy world filled with love and romance. The singer is under their spell and there seems to be no cure for their infatuation. The song is delivered with a smooth and sultry jazz style, which adds to the dream-like quality of the lyrics.
Overall, "Weaver of Dreams" is a poetic expression of the power of love and the way it can sweep a person off their feet. The lyrics are delivered with a sense of longing and vulnerability that captures the listener's attention and draws them into the romantic world of the song.
