I'm Alive
Kenny Chesney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So damn easy to say that life's so hard
Everybody's got their share of battle scars
As for me, I'd like to thank my lucky stars
That I'm alive and well

It'd be easy to add up all the pain
And all the dreams you sat and watched go up in flames
Dwell on the wreckage as it smolders in the rain
But not me, I'm alive

And today, you know that's good enough for me
Breathing in and out's a blessing, can't you see?
Today's the first day of the rest of my life
And I'm alive and well
Yeah, I'm alive and well

Stars are dancing on the water here tonight
It's good for the soul when there's not a soul in sight
This boat has caught its wind and brought me back to life
Now I'm alive and well

And today, you know that's good enough for me
Breathing in and out's a blessing, can't you see?
Today's the first day of the rest of my life

Now I'm alive and well
Yeah, I'm alive and well

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Kenny Chesney's song "I'm Alive" convey a message about being grateful for life and focusing on the positive, rather than dwelling on the negative. The song reminds us that while life can be difficult and we all have our struggles, it is important to appreciate the good things and to keep moving forward.

The first verse acknowledges that life can be tough, but rather than dwelling on the pain and suffering, the singer chooses to focus on the fact that he is alive and grateful for it. The second verse reinforces this message, emphasizing that even though dreams may have been shattered, it is important to keep moving forward and to appreciate the simple things like breathing.

The final verse brings the message home, noting the beauty of the stars on the water and the joy of being alive, even when there is no one else around. The song leads with an acoustic guitar and Chesney’s signature vocal softness, but gradually builds to a rousing crescendo, emphasizing the power of the message.

Overall, "I'm Alive" is an uplifting song that reminds us to appreciate life and to focus on the good things, even in difficult times.

My Mom passed away and I took it hard. I hadn't talked or listened to TV or radio for 3 days. On way home from Funeral Home I turned on my car radio. This song was playing and it floored me. I had never heard it but Mom was speaking straight to me. It got me through and I still can't listen to it without crying. I will never forget it. Beautiful!!!
