Young
Kenny Chesney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lookin' back now well it makes me laugh,
We were growin' our hair,
We were cuttin' class,
Knew it all already there was nothing to learn,
We were strikin' matches just to watch em burn.

Listenin' to our music just a little too loud,
We were hanging in there with the outcast crowd,
Headin' to the rapids with some discount beer,
It was a long train tressle but we had no fear,

Man I don't know where the time goes
But it sure goes fast, just like that,
We were wannabe rebels that didn't have a clue
In our rock n roll tee shirts and our typically bad attitudes
Had no excuses for the things that we'd done
We were brave, we were crazy, we were mostly
Young, young

Talked a good game, we were right with the guys
But in the backseat we were awkward and shy
Girls were a mystery that we couldn't explain,
And I guess there are some things that are never gonna change

Man I don't know where the time goes
But it sure goes fast, just like that
We were wannabe rebels that didn't have a clue
In our rock n roll tee shirts and our typically bad attitudes
Had no excuses for the things that we'd done
We were brave, we were crazy, we were mostly
Young, young, young

Yeah and wishing we were older
Young
Hey I wish it wasn't over

Man I don't know where the time goes,
But it sure goes fast, just like that
We were wannabe rebels that didn't have a clue
In our rock n roll tee shirts and our typically bad attitudes
Had no excuses for the things that we'd done
We were brave, we were crazy, we were mostly
Young, young

Hey and wishing we were older
And I wish it wasn't over

Overall Meaning

Kenny Chesney's song "Young" is a nostalgic look back at a group of friends who were in their youth, doing things that they thought were important at the time, but were actually just a part of growing up. The lyrics reminisce about a time when the kids in question didn't yet have responsibilities, expectations, or any real sense of direction. They were just a bunch of wannabe rebels who wore rock n roll tees and had bad attitudes. They were "growin' their hair" and "cuttin' class," listening to their music "just a little too loud." They didn't really care about much except having a good time with their friends.

As the song progresses, we see that the group was a little misguided in their rebel aspirations. They were "right with the guys," but "awkward and shy" around girls. They had "no excuses for the things that we'd done," but it wasn't like they were breaking any real laws or getting themselves into serious trouble. They were mostly just young, and that inexperience in life comes across in the lyrics.

Even though the song is mostly lamenting the loss of youth and the carefree days of adolescence, it ends on a poignant note. The singer looks back on his youth with fondness, but also with wistful sadness. He wishes he wasn't older, and he wishes that time didn't go by so fast. He remembers the good times he had with his friends when they were young, and realizes that those moments are gone forever.

Strongest line from this song..."man I wish it wasn't over"
Age is just a number, its never "over" keep your spirit alive, you can be forever young

@ThatGuy-vi8ch

This is true. I'm 33 but when people see my high spirit and still skateboarding they think I'm 23. My body might be older outside but I'm keeping young inside.
