Spring Is Here
Kenny Dorham Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Spring is here! Why doesn't my heart go dancing?
Spring is here! Why isn't the waltz entrancing?
No desire, no ambition leads me
Maybe it's because nobody needs me
Spring is here! Why doesn't the breeze delight me?
Stars appear, why doesn't the night invite me?
Maybe it's because nobody loves me
Spring is here I hear

Spring is here! Why doesn't my heart go dancing?
Spring is here! Why isn't the waltz entrancing?
No desire, no ambition leads me
Maybe it's because nobody needs me
Spring is here! Why doesn't the breeze delight me?
Stars appear, why doesn't the night invite me?

Maybe it's because nobody loves me
Spring is here I hear

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Kenny Dorham and Cannonball Adderley's song "Spring Is Here" reflect on the joy and beauty of spring season, yet the singer finds themselves unable to fully experience and enjoy it. The repetition of the question "Spring is here! Why..." suggests a sense of confusion and frustration with themselves. The lack of dancing, entrancement, delight, and love highlights the singer's melancholy state. The line "Maybe it's because nobody needs me" reveals the root of their sadness - a feeling of being unimportant and unwanted. Despite the arrival of spring and the beauty around them, the singer feels disconnected and alone.

This song speaks to the universal experience of feeling disconnected or unfulfilled despite being in a beautiful, joyful environment. The use of metaphorical language, such as the "breeze" and "night," conveys a sense of detachment and isolation. The repetition of the phrase "Spring is here" acts as a reminder to the listener that although new beginnings and hope are present, it doesn't necessarily guarantee happiness. The song invites us to reflect on our own feelings of disconnection during moments of presumed happiness and newness.

Finally, a version of this song that doesn't depress me . . . .

Got that right! But don't give up! Have you heard the Bert Braud arrangement? It won't just knock your socks off, it'll unknit them in the process. I have a very old, scratchy vinyl recording of that arrangement. If I can ever get the scratches out (a project I'll get to one of these days) I'll hopefully post on YT someday.
