Born in New York City, New York, he first recorded with Howard McGhee in 1949, and over the next two years recorded with Buddy DeFranco, Coleman Hawkins, Milt Jackson, Charlie Parker, Buddy Rich, and Dinah Washington. He then led many recording sessions throughout the 1950s, and appeared on John Coltrane's album Blue Train.
Along with several other American jazz musicians who went to Europe, in 1961 he moved to Denmark. While he sacrificed much of the interest of the American jazz audience, he gained a wide following across Europe. Kenny Drew was a well known figure on the Copenhagen jazz scene, recording many sessions with the Danish bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen.
On his passing in 1993, Kenny Drew was interred in the Assistens Kirkegård in the Nørrebro section of Copenhagen.
His son Kenny Drew, Jr. is also a jazz pianist.
Bewitched Bothered And Bewildered
Kenny Drew Lyrics

But a fool can have her charms
I'm in love and don't I show it
Like a babe in arms
Love's the same old situation
Lately I've not slept a wink
Since this crazy situation
I'm wild again, beguiled again
A whimpering, simpering child again
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered, am I
Couldn't sleep, wouldn't sleep
Love came and told me, shouldn't sleep
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered, am I
I lost my heart, but what of it
She is cold I agree
She might laugh, but I love it
Although the laugh's on me
I'll sing to her, bring spring to her
And long, for the day when I'll cling to her
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered, am I
The lyrics of Kenny Drew's song Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered present us with a complex emotional situation. The singer of the song is in love with a woman who is a fool, and he knows it. However, he is enchanted by her charms, and shows his love for her openly, like a helpless child. We can see that he is struggling with his emotions: he can't sleep, he is wild and beguiled, but also whimpering and simpering like a child. He is bewitched, bothered, and bewildered by her.
The chorus of the song reveals even more about the singer's emotional state. He is unable to sleep because of this "crazy situation" that he finds himself in. Love has come and told him that he shouldn't sleep, and he is now bewitched, bothered, and bewildered by his feelings for this woman. We can see that the singer is in a vulnerable position, and that his emotions are overwhelming him. He lost his heart to this woman, even though he knows that she is cold. He is willing to sing to her, bring spring to her, and long for the day when he'll cling to her.
