What You Want
Kenny Feinstein Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

what I do I say
but I can't get far away
oh, I go back to
a memory again
what you want
but you know that I'm alive
then I'll go back to you
what I feel inside

when you come down blue
but I do, I do, I do
oh, I come back to
the one who calls my name out
what you want
don't you know that I can smile
then I go back to you
and then you make him go inside

turn around and smile
unless you can't see through your eyes
could I fall into you, come and talk to me(?)
come back down, and I take it use my lung(?)
then it surrounds you
don't you know that I have sworn

when you come down blue
but I do, I do, I do
oh, I come back to
the one who calls my name out
what you want
let me know that I'm alive

then I go back to you
and then you make him go inside

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Kenny Feinstein's song What You Want suggest a struggle with conflicting emotions, where the singer finds themselves unable to move far from past memories, but also simultaneously drawn towards somebody who makes them feel alive. The first verse starts with the line, "what I do I say, but I can't get far away", suggesting that while the singer may express a desire to move on, they feel stuck in the past, revisiting memories once again. However, the following line, "oh, I go back to a memory again", implies that the singer finds comfort in dwelling on these memories.

The chorus, "what you want, but you know that I'm alive, then I'll go back to you, what I feel inside", seems to be directed towards someone who the singer longs to be with, someone who makes them feel alive. However, the repetition of "go back to you" suggests that the singer is struggling to fully commit to this person, perhaps because of the pull of the past memories. The second verse similarly suggests this internal struggle, with lines like "when you come down blue, but I do, I do, I do, oh, I come back to the one who calls my name out". Here, the singer seems to acknowledge that they may not always be there for this person they care about when they need their support, but nonetheless is drawn back to them.

The bridge, "turn around and smile, unless you can't see through your eyes, could I fall into you, come and talk to me(?), come back down, and I take it use my lung(?), then it surrounds you, don't you know that I have sworn", is somewhat cryptic, but may suggest a desire for connection and falling into somebody. However, the final line, "don't you know that I have sworn", seems to suggest that there are still reservations that the singer has within themselves about truly giving in to these feelings.
