His fourth album, Duotones, brought him breakthrough success in 1986. Kenny G's main instrument is the soprano saxophone, but he also on occasion plays alto and tenor saxophone. He started playing the saxophone when he was 10 years old, in 1966.

Kenny G has long been the musician many jazz listeners love to hate. A phenomenally successful instrumentalist whose recordings make the pop charts, Kenny G's sound has been a staple on adult contemporary jazz and smooth jazz radio stations since the mid-'80s, making him a household name. Kenny G is a fine player with an attractive sound (influenced a bit by Grover Washington, Jr.) who often caresses melodies, putting a lot of emotion into his solos. Because he does not improvise much (sticking mostly to predictable melody statements), his music largely falls outside of jazz. However, because he is listed at the top of "contemporary jazz" charts and is identified with jazz in the minds of the mass public, he is classified as a jazz artist.

i saw a kenny G concert in london last year. the audience absolutely loves him. he enjoys what he does. he has sold more records that most instrumentalists. kenny g does not have to play complex jazz. he has found his market segment...people who just want easy listening and nothing more...

From what i read on kenny g, there used to be a lot of argument on his playstyle which didnt please the old school saxx players. Kenny G is doing a lot of 'freestyle' in his compositions, and that pissed off classic jazz players, who didn't recognise his style as a talent but more like a mockery towards what they think is 'real playing'. Of course, now kenny g is well recognised and played really amazing pieces. Kenny G rulez, that's all I can say! :D

@rickjames21 Kenny G is underrated because jazz today went academic. In academic universities he is despised. They don't even consider him a jazz player. It is almost a since to equate him with Jazz. . But I agree he is one of the bets Sax I heard. He knows how to bring out clear "unique" quality sound. Which is, by the way, important to jazz.

I mean generally (as in "not always," but more often than not, even if only slightly - I feel the need to qualify everything I say on YouTube...) his songs are really highly arranged. There's more to them than some chords and a melody line, which is what most old school players tend to work with. The rest of the music tends to be made up in the studio on the spot, which is impossible with synthesized and sequenced instruments. I'm not saying that makes them better, though. That's just the truth.

obviously there must be more..... Buying emotions from a bussinessman is more buying geometry. There's someting going on, even Pat Metheny gets mad. See one of his video's about Kenny. Why is everybody mad about Kenny and not about his 'better playing than kenny' sax-playing neighbor?

They could have gone pop, but they didnt because they were the ones that reacted against pop jazz which in swing era, better called "Swing Jazz" Many of those artists made money in swing era, but then they went their own ways and started bebop, hard bop, funky jazz...etc. There is no body to blame here. Kenny G realized that he wanted to make money, so he went pop.

Ok lemme just say this, I know Kenny G may not be the best compared to most jazz musicians. I also know that everyone has their own opinion on who is best but get this. I think all musicians are just as good! but that's only because I like just about every type of music so... You all can go ahead and brag about who's best while I think all music is the best :)

@GR8XKP I don´t think anyone is thinking of themselves as an equal to Kenny G... the problem is that there are SO MANY more talented musicians out there... most of us dis Kenny on reguards to talent not to albums sold... if that was a way to measure talent then Justin Beiber would be more talented than Kenny G.

The heck does "freestyle" mean? If by "freestyle," you mean "improvisation," and you think *that* pissed off "classic jazz players," then you are clearly mistaken. The comparative lack of improv in most of Kenny G's songs is precisely what most jazz aficionados can't stand. If that's not what you mean, please elaborate for me, because I honestly can't figure out what your trying to say.
