I don't know why
Kenny G & David Benoit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I waited 'till I saw the sun
I don't know why I didn't come
I left you by the house of fun
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come

When I saw the break of day
I wished that I could fly away
Instead of kneeling in the sand
Catching teardrops in my hand

My heart is drenched in wine
But you'll be on my mind
Forever

Out across the endless sea
I would die in ecstasy
But I'll be a bag of bones
Driving down the road alone

My heart is drenched in wine
But you'll be on my mind
Forever

Something has to make you run
I don't know why I didn't come
I feel as empty as a drum
I don't know why I didn't come

I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Kenny G Feat. David Benoit's song Don't Know Why explore the feelings of regret, longing, and confusion that arise after a love affair has ended. The singer in the song is filled with remorse for having left his lover behind, and he's unsure why he didn't choose to stay. He notes that he waited until he saw the sun, implying that he spent the night with his lover, but then left her behind at the "house of fun." He doesn't understand why he couldn't have stayed with her, and his heart is filled with the pain of loss.

As the singer watches the break of day, he wishes he could escape his feelings of sadness and misery. He is catching teardrops in his hand, a physical demonstration of his emotional distress. Despite his heart being "drenched in wine," he cannot forget his lost love, and she will be on his mind forever. He fantasizes about dying in ecstasy across the endless sea, but he knows that he will likely end up alone and empty, a "bag of bones" driving down the road. He doesn't understand why he didn't stay with his lover, and he questions what made him run away.

The lyrics to Don't Know Why convey a sense of loss, confusion, and heartbreak that anyone who has experienced a failed relationship can relate to. They capture the feelings of regret and longing that can haunt us long after a love has ended, and they remind us that sometimes, we may never fully understand why things happened the way they did.

Andrew I see why you like the instrumental touch more than the voice virgin. I always thought there was a little something unlikeable about the way this piece was song. Thanx for making me realize. Its just like when Sir Michael Paulo did as good a job playing "Georgia' as Ray Charles did with the vocal. I didn't think it was possible. Check out Michael Paulo. He does many songs with Peter White. Let me know what you think.

I love this version, from Seattle but not into Kenny G., though his son is also a good musician. Anyways, yes Michael Polo is awesome, I have one of his CD. They'll be here in Seattle next month, Peter White, Michael Polo and the band.

Andrew Ross

I like this Instrumental version of Don't know Why mush better then the original version sung by Norah Jones, this version is by Kenny G and David Benoit.
