Loggins was born in Everett, Washington and is the youngest of three brothers. His mother was Lina (née Massie), a homemaker, and his father, Robert George Loggins, was a salesman. They lived in Detroit and Seattle before settling in Alhambra, California. Loggins attended San Gabriel Mission High School, graduating in 1966. He formed a band called the Second Helping that released three singles during 1968 and 1969 on Viva Records. Greg Shaw described the efforts as "excellent punky folk-pop records" that were written by Loggins who was likely to be the bandleader and singer as well; Shaw included "Let Me In" on both Highs in the Mid-Sixties, Volume 2 and the Pebbles, Volume 9 CD.
Loggins had a short gig playing guitar for the New Improved Electric Prunes in 1969 before writing four songs for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, which were included in their Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy album. During his early twenties, he was part of the band Gator Creek with Mike Deasy. An early version of "Danny's Song" (later recorded by Loggins and Messina and a No. 7 Hot 100 hit for Anne Murray in 1973) was included in a record on Mercury Records.
Loggins appears in the 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V playing himself as the host of an in-game radio station called Los Santos Rock Radio. He also lends the songs "Danger Zone" and "I'm Free (Heaven Helps the Man)", and sings station jingles.
In 2014, Loggins appeared as himself in the episode "Baby Shower" of the fifth season of the animated comedy series Archer. His song "Danger Zone" had been a recurring joke in the show. At the end of the episode and during the credits, Loggins also performs a country version of "Danger Zone" as a duet with the character of Cherlene. Loggins stated in a later interview that his in-show nickname 'K-Log' is a complete creation of the show, stating, "It was always a joke. That's why it works, because it's so absurd.
Angels In The Snow
Kenny Loggins Lyrics

Then we'll take the kids to Mama's
They can make snow angels in the yard
Like a Christmas card
We'll decorate the tree
Put an angel high above us
Like we always do
At Christmas
On and on it goes
Every year new memories to share
And for all we know
We will all of us be there
When the autumn leaves have gone to gold
And swallows know December's calling
I'll be flying home a thousand times
In all my sweetest dreams
I can see the glow in your eyes
As we sit by the fire
Like lovers we knew long ago
While we watch our angels in the snow
When December comes
We'll be trying to remember
Where we packed our woolen winter clothes
Only heaven knows
When December comes
We'll be hanging pine and holly
Singing all the songs we sing at Christmas
Home is ever near
Hearts return no matter what we do
And Love
Will build a bridge
And I will always be there with you
When the autumn leaves have gone to gold
And swallows know
December's calling
I'll be flying home a thousand times
If only my dreams
And I see the glow in your eyes
As we sit by the fire
Like lovers we knew long ago
While we watch our angels in the snow
The lyrics to Kenny Loggins's "Angels In The Snow" describe the joy of spending time with loved ones during the holiday season. The song paints a picturesque image of a family traveling to their mother's house for the holidays, where the children make snow angels in the yard while the adults decorate the tree and sing Christmas songs. The theme of reminiscing about past memories is present throughout the song, with Loggins describing the bittersweet feeling of looking back on the moments that have come and gone. The lines "Like lovers we knew long ago, while we watch our angels in the snow" further emphasize the idea of being transported back to a time when love was new and everything seemed possible.
Ultimately, the lyrics are a tribute to the power of love and family, even as time passes and memories begin to fade. The references to flying home and the changing of the seasons provide a cyclical feeling, suggesting that no matter how much time goes by, the singer will always have a home and a family to return to during the holidays.

Hearts return no matter what we do
Our hearts always bring us back home

The affection that connects us
Will build a bridge
Will bring us together despite the distance
And I will always be there with you
I'll constantly be present by your side
If only my dreams
If my thoughts merely could become reality
And I see the glow in your eyes
And envision your eyes shining with joy
As we sit by the fire
While we unwind by the fireplace
Like lovers we knew long ago
Recalling our past love
While we watch our angels in the snow
As we observe our kids outside playing in the snow
