Loggins was born in Everett, Washington and is the youngest of three brothers. His mother was Lina (née Massie), a homemaker, and his father, Robert George Loggins, was a salesman. They lived in Detroit and Seattle before settling in Alhambra, California. Loggins attended San Gabriel Mission High School, graduating in 1966. He formed a band called the Second Helping that released three singles during 1968 and 1969 on Viva Records. Greg Shaw described the efforts as "excellent punky folk-pop records" that were written by Loggins who was likely to be the bandleader and singer as well; Shaw included "Let Me In" on both Highs in the Mid-Sixties, Volume 2 and the Pebbles, Volume 9 CD.
Loggins had a short gig playing guitar for the New Improved Electric Prunes in 1969 before writing four songs for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, which were included in their Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy album. During his early twenties, he was part of the band Gator Creek with Mike Deasy. An early version of "Danny's Song" (later recorded by Loggins and Messina and a No. 7 Hot 100 hit for Anne Murray in 1973) was included in a record on Mercury Records.
Loggins appears in the 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V playing himself as the host of an in-game radio station called Los Santos Rock Radio. He also lends the songs "Danger Zone" and "I'm Free (Heaven Helps the Man)", and sings station jingles.
In 2014, Loggins appeared as himself in the episode "Baby Shower" of the fifth season of the animated comedy series Archer. His song "Danger Zone" had been a recurring joke in the show. At the end of the episode and during the credits, Loggins also performs a country version of "Danger Zone" as a duet with the character of Cherlene. Loggins stated in a later interview that his in-show nickname 'K-Log' is a complete creation of the show, stating, "It was always a joke. That's why it works, because it's so absurd.
December

Moonlit wings come into view
Winter casts her spell
And all the world is born anew
A child sees a star through a window
He knows with all his heart
That wonder is coming
Hoping
Believing
Only in December
Are hearts so full
Or feel more alone
Could it be the same
For everyone
Only in December
Can the broken heart
Feel so alive
And the autumn ashes
Become the fires of December
Can I be inside
And out of the cold
Still I know
December always leads me home
I still believe in magic
Always leads me home
And I still believe in miracles, mmm yes
Still believe in Christmas
I still believe in love
The song "December" by Kenny Loggins explores the magical and enchanting season of December, specifically highlighting its power to bring people together through the feeling of wonder, hope, and love. The beginning of the song sets the stage with imagery of moonlit wings and the spell-casting of winter, creating a magical atmosphere. The lyrics then shift to the perspective of a child who sees a star outside his window and is filled with a sense of wonder and anticipation. The child believes that "wonder is coming" and is "hoping" and "believing," showcasing the innocence and excitement that December can bring.
Loggins continues to dive deeper into the emotions that people commonly associate with December. He speaks of the paradox of feeling both "so full" and "more alone" during this time. Only during the month of December can hearts be so full of love and still feel a sense of loneliness. Loggins also questions whether this feeling is universal, asking if it could be the same for everyone. The chorus brings up the concept that December can heal even the most broken hearts and make them feel alive again. The ashes of autumn turn into the fires of December, emphasizing the transformative power of this month. The singer longs to be "inside and out of the cold," but ultimately knows that December will always lead him home. The lyrics end on a hopeful note, with the singer stating his belief in magic, miracles, Christmas, and love.
Overall, the song "December" is a reflection on the many emotions that December can evoke in people. It is a month that can bring people together through feelings of wonder, hope, and love, but can also make people feel alone and pensive. Loggins' lyrics depict the transformative power of this season, showing that even the most broken hearts can be healed during this time.
