Loggins was born in Everett, Washington and is the youngest of three brothers. His mother was Lina (née Massie), a homemaker, and his father, Robert George Loggins, was a salesman. They lived in Detroit and Seattle before settling in Alhambra, California. Loggins attended San Gabriel Mission High School, graduating in 1966. He formed a band called the Second Helping that released three singles during 1968 and 1969 on Viva Records. Greg Shaw described the efforts as "excellent punky folk-pop records" that were written by Loggins who was likely to be the bandleader and singer as well; Shaw included "Let Me In" on both Highs in the Mid-Sixties, Volume 2 and the Pebbles, Volume 9 CD.
Loggins had a short gig playing guitar for the New Improved Electric Prunes in 1969 before writing four songs for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, which were included in their Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy album. During his early twenties, he was part of the band Gator Creek with Mike Deasy. An early version of "Danny's Song" (later recorded by Loggins and Messina and a No. 7 Hot 100 hit for Anne Murray in 1973) was included in a record on Mercury Records.
Loggins appears in the 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V playing himself as the host of an in-game radio station called Los Santos Rock Radio. He also lends the songs "Danger Zone" and "I'm Free (Heaven Helps the Man)", and sings station jingles.
In 2014, Loggins appeared as himself in the episode "Baby Shower" of the fifth season of the animated comedy series Archer. His song "Danger Zone" had been a recurring joke in the show. At the end of the episode and during the credits, Loggins also performs a country version of "Danger Zone" as a duet with the character of Cherlene. Loggins stated in a later interview that his in-show nickname 'K-Log' is a complete creation of the show, stating, "It was always a joke. That's why it works, because it's so absurd.

You're the one who fell
When you let me go
Well didn't that work out well
You said you wanted your freedom
But I'm the one with nothin' to lose
Well, it got cold when the sun went down But baby, bring on the night
Cause startin' right now
Deal âem down and dirty
Feelin' alright
Line âem up
Daddy's getting numb tonight
Gonna act like a fool
Who can't say no to nothin'
So what if she don't want me back
Tonight I'm getting' lucky like a one-eyed Jack
And it's a perfect night for shoutin' out loud
I'm a free man now
You're the one who said
This'll work out fine
You got what you wanted
Now I'll get mine
And it serves you right
If my heart works better than ever
If this is the dark before the dawn
Then baby bring on the night
Cause life goes on
I bet you didn't think I'd survive
I may be broken
But I'm still alive
When this cryin' is over
I'll be laughin' out loud
Cause I'm a free man now
The lyrics of "I'm A Free Man Now" by Kenny Loggins are all about letting go and embracing newfound freedom. The singer acknowledges the pain of the breakup but ultimately realizes that being free from the relationship was the best thing for him. He playfully taunts his ex-lover, pointing out that while she may have been the one to end things, he is the one with nothing to lose now that he is free. He decides to celebrate his newfound freedom by living it up and letting loose. The lyrics are filled with metaphors of the night and day, representing the darkness of his past and the light of his present, where he is free to do whatever he wants.
The chorus of the song is particularly powerful, with Loggins singing “'Cause life goes on, I bet you didn't think I'd survive, I may be broken, but I'm still alive, When this crying' is over, I'll be laughing out loud, 'Cause I'm a free man now.” This line perfectly captures the message of the song, which is about finding strength after a breakup and coming out on the other side better and free.
Overall, "I'm A Free Man Now" is a song about moving on and finding true freedom after a failed relationship. It's a celebratory anthem that encourages listeners to let go of the past and embrace life in the present.
