Loggins was born in Everett, Washington and is the youngest of three brothers. His mother was Lina (née Massie), a homemaker, and his father, Robert George Loggins, was a salesman. They lived in Detroit and Seattle before settling in Alhambra, California. Loggins attended San Gabriel Mission High School, graduating in 1966. He formed a band called the Second Helping that released three singles during 1968 and 1969 on Viva Records. Greg Shaw described the efforts as "excellent punky folk-pop records" that were written by Loggins who was likely to be the bandleader and singer as well; Shaw included "Let Me In" on both Highs in the Mid-Sixties, Volume 2 and the Pebbles, Volume 9 CD.
Loggins had a short gig playing guitar for the New Improved Electric Prunes in 1969 before writing four songs for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, which were included in their Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy album. During his early twenties, he was part of the band Gator Creek with Mike Deasy. An early version of "Danny's Song" (later recorded by Loggins and Messina and a No. 7 Hot 100 hit for Anne Murray in 1973) was included in a record on Mercury Records.
Loggins appears in the 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V playing himself as the host of an in-game radio station called Los Santos Rock Radio. He also lends the songs "Danger Zone" and "I'm Free (Heaven Helps the Man)", and sings station jingles.
In 2014, Loggins appeared as himself in the episode "Baby Shower" of the fifth season of the animated comedy series Archer. His song "Danger Zone" had been a recurring joke in the show. At the end of the episode and during the credits, Loggins also performs a country version of "Danger Zone" as a duet with the character of Cherlene. Loggins stated in a later interview that his in-show nickname 'K-Log' is a complete creation of the show, stating, "It was always a joke. That's why it works, because it's so absurd.
Set It Free
Kenny Loggins Lyrics

Come into my room again
Broken window pane
Now reminds me I'm alive
Could it be right
Giving up, my darling
I'll wait for you now
How I love to write
Songs that have no answers
Oh, there's nothing on my mind
That I want to let go of
Letting it go on pretending
Everything has its way of ending
And I'm a loner
The way I should be
Set it free
Let it free my love to fly
Set it free
Set it free
Let it free my love to be
Can I be free?
Still it's gotta rain
Wonder when I'll see a change in weather
Something's getting tangled up again
And I can't find an end
Can't let it go on returning
I've given everything that the harlequin boy can find
And I'm tired of trying
I'd rather leave than tell lies
Set it free
Let it free my love to fly
Set it free
Set it free
Let it free my love to be
You'll be free
You'll be free my love to fly
Free to be what I can't face
In love again
Set it free
Free
Set it free
Set it free my love
Free
Set it free
Set it free my love
The lyrics to Kenny Loggins's "Set It Free" are a reflection on the struggles and challenges of life, that one must face and overcome in order to truly be free. The opening line, "I can see the rain come into my room again, broken window pane now reminds me I'm alive," sets the tone of the song. The rain represents the hardships and obstacles of life, and the broken window pane symbolizes the vulnerabilities and cracks within oneself. However, this realization that one is alive despite the struggles is a powerful message, as it signifies that one has the strength to face these challenges and emerge stronger.
The lyrics go on to talk about the idea of letting go and setting things free. There is a sense of acceptance that everything has an end, and that it is necessary to let go and move on from certain things. Loggins sings, "Letting it go and pretending, everything has its way of ending, and I'm a loner, the way I should be. Set it free, let it free my love to fly, set it free, set it free, let it free my love to be. Can I be free?" This portrays the struggle to free oneself from the past, and move forward towards a brighter future.
Overall, "Set It Free" is a powerful and emotional song about overcoming the struggles of life, and finding the freedom to be one's true self. The lyrics speak to the message that one must be willing to let go of the past in order to move forward and be happy.
