Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town
Kenny Rogers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You've painted up your lips and rolled and curled your tinted hair
Ruby, are you contemplating going out somewhere?
The shadow on the wall tell me the sun is going down
Oh, Ruby, don't take your love to town

It wasn't me that started that old crazy Asian war
But I was proud to go and do my patriotic chore
And yes, it's true that I'm not the man I used to be
Oh Ruby, I still need some company

It's hard to love a man whose legs are bent and paralyzed
And the wants and needs of a woman your age, really, I realize
But it won't be long, I've heard them say, until I'm not around
Oh Ruby, don't take your love to town

She's leaving now 'cause I just heard the slamming of the door
The way I know I heard its slams one hundred times before
And if I could move, I'd get my gun and put her in the ground
Oh Ruby, don't take your love to town

Oh Ruby, for God's sake, turn around

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town" by Kenny Rogers tell the story of a disabled Vietnam War veteran named Ruby and his relationship with his girlfriend. The song takes place in the evening when Ruby's girlfriend is getting ready to go out. The singer begs her to stay, fearing that she is going out to cheat on him. He sings about how he went to war and did his duty for his country, but he is disabled and can't satisfy a woman's needs the way he used to. The singer's fear and insecurity reach a climax at the end of the song when he hears the door slam, and he wishes he could move to stop her from leaving, but he is paralyzed.

The lyrics paint a picture of a man who is trapped by his disability, unable to fully participate in society or in his own relationship. The song highlights the struggles of disabled veterans and the toll war can take on individuals and their loved ones. The singer's plea to Ruby to not take her love to town is a desperate cry for companionship and understanding in the face of his physical limitations and the changing times.

Proof that music is a universal language. Growing up I loved when Readers Digest came every month in the mail. It had monthly segments like :
Life in These United States
Humor in Uniform
Laughter is the Best Medicine
This was way before internet and I could peek at stuff going on in our country and the world.
In 1975 I took a 2 wk trip to Colombia. Visited Barranquilla, Medellin, Bogota and Cartagena.
Medellin was my favorite city, so lush and green with cool temperatures. Not sure what city the botanical garden we visited was in. There i saw the biggest greenhouse ive ever seen. It was FULL of orchids and they were huge. One real eye opener for me was there were no yellow traffic lights to caution the light was about to turn red. So there were many accidents where the light was green, THEN RED !
We had housed an exchange student in our home in US. in 1974. His dad was president of a Colombian airline so our air travel was free. Dont rememer the name of the airline. I do rember sterling silver coffee sets and the ultra strongly brewed coffee was in the cream server and hot milk was in the coffee pot. Ive not cared for weak coffee since.
My friend's name was Saul Pertuz. We wrote for many years. He graduated from US college then was a pilot for many years. Sadly he passed at about age 50 from crippling rheumatoid arthritis. He was one of the nicest ppl I've ever known. Your country is beautiful.
I think it was in Cartagena, when the wheels hit the runway I saw only the waters of the carribbean outside my plane seat window and thought we had crashed lol. I was only 18 and had never traveled without my parents. I was afraid and trying to act brave...sometimes I still do lol. I don't try as hard tho bc with age comes a relaxing of how hard we can be on ourselves. I learned how to bend and not break.
Happy travels to you through reading and music !

These lyrics did it for me ‘It wasn't me
That started that old crazy Asian war
But I was proud to go
And do my patriotic chore
And yes, it's true that
I'm not the man I used to be
Oh, Ruby, I still need some company
It's hard to love a man
Whose legs are bent and paralyzed
And the wants and the needs of a woman your age
Ruby, I realized’

1966 My dad left when I was 5 years old never to hear from him again. 9 kids my mother taking care of us all by herself. I remember her singing this song along with the radio as we drove down river road going to our favorite swimming hole at river park. Her true voce is in the vocals of this song I can hear it every time I play it. I miss you so much mom!. Thank you for taking care of us, I Love you mom!

Though I served in Vietnam for two years, my only injury was in my heart and in my soul. When I hear this tragic song I still get burning tears in my old tired eyes. I think of my buddies that never came home and the ones that returned in pieces. I have never fully come home cause a part of me still remains in SE Asia. Today I see so many of my fellow vets living on our streets, also broken in pieces, and there is nothing I can do cause I am so poor. Godamn, I love them all!!!
