The First Edition signed with Reprise Records and recorded the pop-psychedelic single "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)", a song later to feature in the Cohen Brothers film "The Big Lebowski". Within a year, the group was billed as "Kenny Rogers and the First Edition" and in the summer of 1969, they once again hit the charts with "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town" (US #6, UK #1).
For the next two years, the First Edition bounced between country, pop and mild psychedelia, enjoying world-wide success.
Molly
Kenny Rogers & The First Edition Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Her mom stayed sick and her dad stayed drunk,
and her baby sister never seemed to care.
When her body ached for loving, she just took it all with a smile,
and baby sister made the rounds and left Molly with her child.
Now Molly's got her hands full, raising baby sister's child.
Every time she holds it close a tear rolls from her eye.
Cause her mama's gone to heaven and her dad is god knows where.
Now molly's got no one to love or to be loved by except a child
that her baby sister didn't want because she said it cramped her style.
Don't cry little baby, somebody needs you now.
Molly will kiss you, rock you to sleep and make it all up somehow.
Molly will kiss you, rock you to sleep and make it up all up somehow.
The lyrics to Kenny Rogers & The First Edition's song "Molly" tell the heartbreaking story of a young woman who never had the chance to experience a love affair because of her family's troubled circumstances. Molly's mother was chronically ill, her father was an alcoholic and her younger sister didn't care about her. Despite her longing for love and affection, Molly couldn't pursue her desires and instead accepted her lot in life with a smile, while her sister indulged in a carefree lifestyle. Molly's situation got more complicated when her sister had a baby and left the child in her care. Molly now has to raise the child, and every time she holds it close, a tear rolls from her eye. With her mother gone, her father absent and her sister living in LA, Molly is left with nobody to love or be loved by, except the child that her sister didn't want because it cramped her style. But Molly will not let the child suffer and promises to kiss it, rock it to sleep and make it all up somehow.
The lyrics of "Molly" are full of poignant details that help paint a picture of the characters' lives and struggles. The song is a commentary on how one person's choices and actions can affect the lives of others, and how love and affection can be in short supply, even within families. The song also highlights the strength and resilience of women who have to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders and take care of those who cannot take care of themselves.
