Tenochtitlan
Kerigma Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Los dioses ordenaron,
hay que abandonar Aztlán.
El lugar de garzas blancas,
y llegar al sitio ideal.
A la tierra prometida,
donde nuestro pueblo,
un gran imperio fundará.
Agua, sigue al águila y al sol.
Agua, ¿dónde esta tu corazón?

Después de muchas lunas,
la señal apareció.
Sobre un cactus, majestuosa,
la gran águila llegó.
Devorando una serpiente,
entregando el sitio,
donde nacerá una nación.

Agua, sigue al águila y al sol.
Agua, aquí esta tu corazón.

Hoy somos los nuevos hijos de Aztlán.
La sangre latiendo en esta nación,
que vuela hacia el futuro,
con rumbo al sol.
Agua, es la gran Tenochtitlan.
Agua, es la gran Tenochtitlan.

Somos tu sangre
Agua.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Kerigma's song Tenochtitlan speak of the journey of the Aztecs from their homeland, Aztlán, to the land that the gods had promised them. The song begins with the line "Los dioses ordenaron" which translates to "The gods ordered", indicating that the Aztecs believed that their journey was divinely ordained. The lyrics go on to describe their journey as they follow the signs from the gods, with the line "Agua, sigue al águila y al sol" meaning "Water, follow the eagle and the sun".

The second half of the song describes the founding of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan. The line "Después de muchas lunas, la señal apareció" meaning "After many moons, the sign appeared" describes the famous legend of the Aztec god Huitzilopochtli appearing to the Aztecs in a vision, telling them to look for an eagle eating a snake on top of a cactus. When they found this sight, it signified the place where they would found their great city. The lyrics end with the line "Somos tu sangre, Agua" meaning "We are your blood, Water", indicating a strong connection and loyalty to their homeland and ancestors.
