Empty
Kevin Abstract Lyrics

Sweaty palms as I walk down this empty road
I got a mom, but we ain't spoke in I don't know
I got a heart that don't speak to me anymore
And life gets hard but these last days been meanin' more
I'm just tryna get my bands up
Why you runnin' through the banners
I don't understand this
You should find your way home

I hate my yearbook photo
I hate my passport
I hate my last name
I hate everything it stands for
I should probably fucking transfer
Blue and brown JanSport
Tired of public transport
I never went to prom
Now I'm stuck on the dance floor
Just holdin' your hand
Just holdin' your hand

And I'll be (I'll be)
Right outside your front door
On my twelve speed (twelve speed)
I got your emotions tattooed on my sleeve (my sleeve)
I think about you all the time
I've waited for you all my life
I need you right here by my side

Blowin' off my mom, I wanna go home
I'd rather be alone, I don't wanna go home
It's gettin' really late so I gotta go home
Mom's blowin' up my phone so I gotta go home

I love my mom
I hate my boyfriend
Do you love my mom? (Love my mom)
Do you hate my boyfriend? (Boyfriend)
But I love my mom

And I'll be
Right outside your front door
On my twelve speed
I got your emotions tattooed on my sleeve
I think about you all the time
I've waited for you all my life
I need you right here by my side

I'll be (I'll be)
Right outside your front door
On my twelve speed (twelve speed)
I got your emotions tattooed on my sleeve (my sleeve)
I think about you all the time
I've waited for you all my life
I need you right here by my side

Empty home
Empty, empty, empty home

I wanna be American
My family is gonne, but I don't care because I love 'em

Overall Meaning

In Kevin Abstract's song "Empty," the artist describes a feeling of isolation and loneliness amidst the chaos of life. With "sweaty palms," he walks down an "empty road" contemplating his current situation. He has a mother, but they haven't spoken in some time, and his heart feels disconnected from him. Despite his struggles, he is focused on making money and finding success. Throughout the song, Abstract reflects on his past and his yearning for connection, both with his mother and with a romantic partner.

The chorus serves as an emotional peak, as the singer proclaims his desire to be with someone who could bring meaning to his life. He has "waited for [them] all [his] life" and wants to be with them, even if it means sacrificing other parts of his life. However, he's also cognizant of the fact that his life is "empty" and feels a sense of disconnect with everything, from his family to his last name.

Abstract's song brilliantly captures the feelings of disconnection and isolation that many young people experience as they try to make sense of their lives. The artist poignantly expresses his emotional state, including his regrets and his aspirations. With its catchy chorus and powerful lyrics, the song is a testament to the power of music to express the human condition.

It takes balls to express anything but heterosexuality in hip hop. You're gonna get hate, but every revolutionary idea scares the close minded initially. Keep it up, mad respect. Phenomenal music and visuals.

@huey6248

you have a misconception about hip hop, its zctully really progressive and all the big rappers preach love regardless of gender

@JohnnyFromVirginia

Huey Blue really though? All this stuff came out of 70’s & 80’s gangs - If anyone was getting down on the same set I’m pretty sure those heads were hella quiet, or dealt with if exposed. Once battle rap came about, it became common occurrences to “disrespect a man” by ‘belittling’ him to being a girl, a homosexual or having his manhood taken away. By early 90’s f*#}%t was as common a word as “bitch” and both were used in tandem for expression of disrespect towards heterosexual males. It was hard enough to let women get involved in the games cause it was such a masculine machismo focused sport. The equality for all shit didn’t start to truly occur until after Eminem came out. Not because of him directly, no no no, but he did actually perpetuate it by claiming it to be ok to call people that word because it didn’t actually mean “you’re a homosexual” as much as it meant the lowest and most degrading thing you could think of. Of course, this didn’t sit well with the LGBTQ community and as time went on, tolerance for this started to slip and that’s when we started seeing rappers change and new rappers take sides for all levels of equality. Ultimately, rappers preaching equal rights and equal love didn’t start putting that stuff on wax until around the Obama years. Again, not directly related to him specifically, just a timeline of occurrences as it were. A specific reference to when it finally became cool to talk about that sort of thing publicly is directly at the time Macklemore dropped “Same Love” and Katy Perry with “Fireworks”. There were homosexual rappers that were out there during the 90’s (the rapper Caution is the first one to come to mind) and Milkbone came out before Eminem but no one was listening about equal hip-hop opportunities for white people post Vanilla Ice until Slim Shady hit the scene. So peace and one love cats outside of Caution and a few heads weren’t really accepting this equal love shit until those early mid 2000’s.
