The powerful, emotion-evoking ballad touches on Kevin’s various struggles throughout life, ranging from the departure of a loved one to family issues. Back then, Kevin announced the album name as They Shoot Horses which was later scrapped for American Boyfriend. The song was shortened and remastered with a completely new production for the album and served as the closing track, ending the story of the album with Kevin running away from home.
“Tyler [Mitchell] and HK came up with the concept. We knew we wanted to do something simple and kind of like introduce people to the +Death of a Supermodel [former name of the second album] universe more clearly. Because I kind of introduced people to it with MTV1987 *, with the “Drugs” video, with the album artwork, and the TextEdit posts I was doing but I really wanted people to live inside it. I want people to own a hoodie and feel like they’re a part of that universe. Or when they’re wearing the hoodie, this is what I’m going to put on as I run away from home. This is that uniform for that situation or scenario.“

Staring at the sky ain't gon' fix my problem
Howling at the moon ain't gon' bring you back
Howling at the moon ain't gon' bring you back
Staring at the sky ain't gon' fix my problem
Staring at the sky ain't gon' fix my problem
Howling at the moon ain't gon' bring you back
Howling at the moon ain't gon' bring you back
Started smoking cigarettes
I even picked up pot again
Coke ain't touch my nose yet
I'm afraid I'll be just like my friend
I'm afraid I ain't gon' have no friends
Oh my god, when do my story end?
Tell me God, when do my story end?
I'm locked outside of the DeLorean
He was a bad son
He was a bad son
He was a bad son
He was a bad son
So he left home, so he left home
He had to run, yeah
He had to run, yeah
He had to run, yeah
He had to run, yeah
Nowhere to go, nowhere to go
You can take a look into my eyes
You can take a look into my eyes
Go ahead and tell me what you find
You can take a look into my eyes
You can take a look into my eyes
You can take a look into my eyes
Tell me what you find
Go ahead and tell me what you find
When did it all fall down?
Where you going now?
When did it all fall down?
Where you going now?
When did it all fall down?
Where do you run to now?
When did it all come down?
Where do you run to now?
Where do you run to now?
Where do you run to now?
Where do you run to now?
Where do you run to now?
The lyrics of Kevin Abstract's song Echo reflect a sense of longing, regret, and desperation. The repetition of the lines "Staring at the sky ain't gon' fix my problem" and "Howling at the moon ain't gon' bring you back" underscore the futility of trying to find solutions through these actions, suggesting that the singer is stuck in a rut, unable to move on. The lines "Started smoking cigarettes, I even picked up pot again" hint at the singer's attempt to cope with their problems, but shows that they are going back to their old ways, depicting a sense of hopelessness, despite trying to overcome their struggles.
The chorus of the song talks about someone who was a bad son and had to run away, leaving them with nowhere to go, reflecting the idea of running away from problems. The lines "Tell me God, when do my story end? I'm locked outside the DeLorean" suggests that the singer feels like they are stuck in a perpetual loop of bad experiences, and they are desperate for a way out of their situation.
The song is about self-doubt, insecurities, and the inability to cope with problems, leaving the singer feeling stuck and powerless. The song's repetitive chorus and simple yet impactful lyrics make it a poignant and relatable portrayal of personal struggles.

This song reminds me of my emotional vulnerable times when I was in the hospital for suicide threats. That was the most depressing day with the most beautiful night. I saw the prettiest view from the top floor.
