Fowler put together a country band in 1998 and began playing Tuesday nights at Babe's on Sixth Street in Austin. Within two years, he'd begun recording albums and struck big with his self-released Beer, Bait and Ammo (2000). The album sold around 30,000 copies in the Texas area and garnered an impressive amount of airplay, particularly for the album's title track. The song became somewhat of a Texas anthem; Mark Chesnutt made the song part of his live show, and Sammy Kershaw recorded it. Fowler returned in 2002 with his third album, High on the Hog, and boasted some impressive guests, including Willie Nelson and David Lee Garza.
Best Mistake I Ever Made

Glad that I was free
Had my whole life ahead
There was nothing stoppin me
Headed out to Vegas, me and all my friends
Just a bunch of clowns runnin round in a town of sin
Ten shots later and one double dare
Met a girl said I do in some chapel out there
That was the best mistake I ever made
The Lord works in mysterious ways
Chose a wrong path all my life
But for once I did something right
And just one look in her and I see
Someone smiling down on me
And I'm not too proud to say
That was the best mistake I ever made
Trying to start a family was the last thing we had planned
Till I came home from work
She had her head in her hands
I could see the worry
Through the teardrops in her eyes
She said, "How we gonna do this when we're barely gettin by?"
We wern't prepared for all those changes in our world
That all changed when the doctor said it's a girl
That was the best mistake I ever made
The Lord works in mysterious ways
Chose a wrong path all my life
But for once I did something right
And just one look in her and I see
Someone smiling down on me
And I'm not too proud to say
That was the best mistake I ever made
There's consequences to the decisions in our lives
Just cause we didn't mean to do it that don't mean that it ain't right
That was the best mistake I ever made
The Lord works in mysterious ways
Chose a wrong path all my life
But for once I did something right
And just one look in her and I see
Someone smiling down on me
And I'm not too proud to say
That was the best mistake I ever made
The song "Best Mistake I Ever Made" by Kevin Fowler is about taking chances and the unexpected outcomes that can result. In the first verse, Fowler sings about heading to Las Vegas with his friends and impulsively getting married to a woman he just met in a chapel there. He calls it the "best mistake" he's ever made because it led to something wonderful in his life. The chorus reinforces this sentiment, suggesting that even though he's made mistakes in his life, this unexpected turn of events turned out to be a blessing.
In the second verse, Fowler sings about the challenges of starting a family, something he and his wife had not planned for. However, when they found out they were having a baby girl, it changed their lives for the better. The song suggests that even when we make mistakes or life takes unexpected turns, there can still be positive outcomes that come from them.
The final verse reinforces this idea, saying that even though we may not mean to make mistakes, it doesn't mean they can't lead to positive outcomes. The message of the song is to take chances, even if they may seem like mistakes at the time, because they can lead to unexpected and wonderful things.
