Kevin Gates first began rapping in 2007, when he began making music with fellow Louisiana natives such as Webbie and Lil Boosie. Gates first received attention with his 2008 single "Get in the Way" featuring Lil Boosie. Soon after, he and Boosie would be incarcerated in separate cases. Gates would then be released in 2011 and immediately returned to recording music. He would soon earn the attention of Lil' Wayne. In early 2013, Gates released a mixtape, The Luca Brasi Story which was called "easily the best rap-related thing" in February 2013 by Spin Magazine. The Luca Brasi Story has been downloaded from popular mixtape sharing site, DatPiff, over 130,000 times.
On February 15, 2013, it was announced that Kevin Gates signed to Atlantic Records. Gates was also featured on Pusha T's 2013 mixtape as well as on Gudda Gudda's mixtape. On July 16, 2013 Gates released a street album titled Stranger Than Fiction, the street album was supported by the single "4:30".
He released his latest project By Any Means in 2014, and from there exploded in even more popularity. Mid-year made his way onto the cover of the 2014 XXL Freshman list.

(Always) my daddy did this shit
I can't see no other way
His daddy did this shit (one way, dumb way)
Go Grizz (I'm a real big speaker)
Controllin' shit, I'm scorin' flippers, ain't nobody want look
Losin' focus, burnin' soda, tryna win off a cook
Go to Texas, grab a hook and put that bass in the hood
Bitch, I got weight in the hood, I'm up in rank in the hood
My lil' soldiers on it, I no longer stay in the hood
Quiet as kept, I was the first to put that H in the hood
With Big Marques, I'm sippin' lean, would take a break if I could
Phone bling-a-ling-a-lingin', it retarded, come see me (hello)
Trap do a ninety, it's a quarter ki' eater
Hold it down when I'm on lock, callin' shots from the box
Diamond teeth full of rocks, I'm a real big speaker
As-salΔmu ΚΏalaykum, akhi
Wa-Alaikum As-Salaam, el Wa Rahmato Allah
Are you well?
I'm a real big speaker
And look, shout out to my bitch, I was penitentiary rich
In the streets I do my shit, I could really feed people
As-salΔmu ΚΏalaykum, mozza, ta'alee, jamelek be jannini
I'm a real big speaker
I don't fear nothin' but God, I ain't got no bodyguard
In the streets or on the walk
I'm a real big speaker
I hold it down for the Breadwinner cartel
Wallahi, I sworn to God
With non-believers, I fuss and fall
It's cold, but it's fair, but it come with it all
In my pocket, I got funds, metric ton, love
Chances made a champion, pick that metric ton up (hold up)
Ay, keep 'em starin' in this bitch
I am turnt in the party, diamonds dancin' in this bitch
Crack a smile, woo, God, bling, blaow, drippin' water
Necklace is moonwalkin', Michael Jackson in this bitch
I'm rockin' some glasses, takin' some classes
Fast, tilt, two-seater
Presidential when I step, had to catch her breath
She seen the Cartier, got cardiac arrest
You know what happens next, I'm a real big speaker
As-salΔmu ΚΏalaykum, akhi
Wa-Alaikum As-Salaam, el Wa Rahmato Allah
Are you well?
I'm a real big speaker
And look, shout out to my bitch, I was penitentiary rich
In the streets I do my shit, I could really feed people
As-salΔmu ΚΏalaykum, mozza, ta'alee, jamelek be jannini
I'm a real big speaker
I'm a real big speaker
I'm a real big speaker
The song "Intro" by Kevin Gates is a reflection of his life. In the first verse, he talks about how his father was involved in illegal activities, and he couldn't imagine any other way of making a living. He feels like he is continuing a tradition of sorts, and it's the only way he knows how to live. The chorus repeats the phrase "I'm a real big speaker" multiple times, which could be interpreted in different ways. It could be seen as Gates emphasizing his status and power, or it could be a reference to his music as a way of expressing himself and his struggles.
In the second verse, Gates talks about his experiences in the streets and how he had to hustle to survive. He mentions how he was one of the first to sell drugs in his neighborhood and how he had a significant influence on his community. Despite his illegal activities, he believes that he is helping those in need, and he could "really feed people." The last verse is mostly about his material successes, with Gates bragging about his wealth and fashion choices. He puts on a show of opulence and luxury, but it's unclear whether he truly feels fulfilled with his life.
Overall, "Intro" seems to be a way for Kevin Gates to tell his life story and express his innermost thoughts and feelings. His upbringing and experiences in the streets have shaped him into the person he is today, and he seems to embrace his status as a real big speaker.
