His first appearances in television and film were in 2005. McHale currently stars on Glee as Artie Abrams, a member of the McKinley High glee club who uses a wheelchair. Although his character is in a wheelchair, McHale is an able-bodied dancer and has responded that it was hard to keep his feet from moving along with the music while he was on the set. He had his first solo single on Glee singing "Dancing with Myself" in the episode "Wheels". In the episode "Dream On" he danced in a fantasy sequence to "The Safety Dance" and sang "Dream a Little Dream of Me".
McHale's acting credits include a 2007 appearance on NBC's The Office in the season 4 episode "Launch Party", where he played a pizza delivery boy who is taken hostage by Steve Carell's character, Michael Scott. In 2008, McHale was on HBO's True Blood for two episodes as Neil Jones, a coroner's assistant. Kevin was also in three episodes of Nickelodeon's hit show Zoey 101 as Dooley. In 2010, McHale appeared in One Call's music video 'Blacklight' alongside his fellow former NLT member, Justin.

A new born King to see, pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
So to honor Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
When we come
I am a poor boy too pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring pa rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give our King pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
Shall I play for you? Pa rum pum pum
On my drum, yeah
Mary nodded pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him pa rum pum pum
I played my best for Him pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum
This song tells the story of the Little Drummer Boy who hears about a newborn King and sets out to visit him with the other wise men. However, unlike the other wise men who have brought costly gifts, the Drummer Boy has nothing to offer the King. Instead, he offers to play his drum for the King as a gift. The song describes how Mary and the animals nod and keep time to the Drummer Boy's beat as he plays his drum for the King. Finally, the newborn King smiles at the Drummer Boy in appreciation for his simple yet heartfelt gift of music.
The lyrics of this song are simple yet powerful, conveying the message that even the poorest and most humble among us can offer something valuable and meaningful to others. By offering his musical talent, the Drummer Boy demonstrates that it's not the cost or extravagance of a gift that matters, but rather the intention and sincerity behind it. The song thus celebrates the spirit of Christmas and the values of love, kindness, and generosity that are associated with it.
