I found it suspicious when Blanche Lament was missing, Theodore opined she sought a life of ill repute. Theodore was not a gentleman; however, did he indeed murder these women? This case is haunting.

I don't know whether Theodore was guilty or not, but whoever did this clearly got a type. The poor girls had quite similar features - the soft jaw and round chin, small straight nose, delicate mouth and dark curls made them look almost like sisters.

Wow! It's always tricky when the police concentrate on only one possible suspect to form an opinion. But in this case I suspect from the other evidence, particularly his possession of the rings of one and the bag of the other, he was responsible for the crimes. Both victims also have facial and social similarities, suggesting one culprit who likely would have continued with such crimes. Brilliantly presented Brief Case! Reminds me of Bundy. Didn't he target brunettes with their hair parted in the middle of a certain stature, because his girlfriend from years ago shared those features and he never got over their breakup? I wonder if it was the same for this guy or if that was just the "type" he found attractive? I think Bundy even got back together with his original ex from college, wined and dined and proposed to her, only to leave her basically on the altar, saying, "I never wanted to get back with you, this is revenge for dumping me. F*** you!" Serious psychological problems.

The brain is totally wired to trust and esteem beautiful people. Possibly so there will be many good-looking people in the furure. We all know they are the most sucessful! I remember in the third grade my class was asked to pick the woman they liked best (from two) I was the only one who picked the less attractive one! I thought she looked "nicer"

The dashing, the debonair, the good looking, the average looking, the homely, etc.
We all can be victims, but some aren't so fortunate to come out of an encounter unscathed or even alive.

Sometimes we are victims without even realizing it too.

There are some pretty sick, evil people out there.
It's no different now, than back in the day. Unfortunately, they will always be amongst us.
Very sad story.

Cases like these are so interesting. Hanging him based on little to no physical evidence seems brutal - though the witness statements do suggest he killed those ladies. Leaves one wishing there was a way to know what truly happened.

Being seen with even more than one of the women just before their deaths by a lot of witnesses was probably considered very good evidence for the time. It is worrisome that many innocent people must have been executed.

These older cases are always so fascinating. I think he was a narcissist and was probably guilty. But they didn't really prove it in court. I just know I wouldn't want to be found guilty of two murders with such evidence. But I'm not a murderer.

Interesting Fact: Minnie was buried at Laurel Ceek, but when San Francisco outlawed cemeteries inside the city limits in 1937 around 40,000 give or take a thousand were taken to Cypress Lawn Cemetery and buried in a mass grave. It's very sad because San Francisco should have allowed the cemeteries in existence to stay and just create new cemeteries outside the limits of San Francisco. It's hard to tell who is buried where now, and it's very disrespectful to the deceased. Imo, it was all greed and land development. Blanche Lamont was laid to rest back in her state of Montana.

@lazy homebody Yes! It was horrible and so many family trees are now incomplete. I guess what makes it really sad are the people that are now lost and forgotten due to this removal of all the bodies. I believe maybe less than 10 percent were identified and those families put their loved ones in a crypt or cremated their remqins, but thousands were probably tossed into a huge pit. Idk, but to me is very disturbing.

This episode was chilling and well done. One thing common about male, female predators and abusive people who could be potentially dangerous – is that they do not care if they made someone feel uncomfortable. Then they lie about it. Unfortunately, it was not discovered about this person’s demented character till after the Murders he was being inappropriate with other women. In those days flirting was not uncommon, so how does a potential victim tell the difference. Sad.

What I like about this channel is the the almost always happy ending. The justice system back then the death penalty was swift wasn’t perfect but it was WAY MORE JUST OVERALL to the victims families and the public.

It may appear more just than it seems now, when there's no doubt of guilt and prisoners wait so many years on death row, but you're only seeing a small handful of cases. When you think of how many other, innocent people must have been executed because of a desire for quick justice combined with bias and a lack of forensics, etc, I don't think your statement stands.

This one seemed pretty cut and dry even if circumstantial. Tho if he had an accomplice that actually did the killing, that would explain the lack of blood on the man and his declaring his innocence to the death. I suspect someone else was involved here, someone who was strong. This chap seemed like the one to lure in the ladies and holding the valuables. My gut says he didn't do this alone...unless of course he found somewhere inside to dispose of the clothes, perhaps inside the walls of the church? 🤷🏻‍♀️ He would have had to have been prepared in advance with extra clothes...but I'm not sure he really was that smart considering he was caught with the ladies personal items. (I am suspicious of the organ player...🤔)

Like others here, I find the insistence of innocence up to the very last unsettling...but perhaps it was an attempt to assuage the grief of his parents? And the detail of the rings: if he had indeed tried unsuccessfully to pawn them, why send them to the aunt?

I catch myself always being so blown away with being able to view vintage photographs. As well as how impressed I am that people during that time were able to document certain things pretty well, even with the given limitations of the technology of photography during those days. It took effort to aquire film, to develop the negatives, to make prints, it's just impressive when I think of that era and the things they were working with then.

Maybe he found it by chance. The killer (if it really wasn’t Derrant) might have dropped the jewelry in their haste to escape the cops and he found the pieces. Then he might have figured that if he pawned them he could get money. There are cases of innocent people who are caught with items from a crime brought to them by the true criminal(s) or else found them by chance. Who knows really with this case.

Robert Graysmith wrote an interesting book about this case that's well worth reading if you want to know more about this case. His theory was that Jack the Ripper moved to San Francisco after fleeing London and committed these crimes.

He might not necessarily been guilty of the murders. There are cases where people who turn out to be innocent are caught with incriminating evidence so the problem is there was really only circumstantial evidence Durant (Derrant?) connecting him to the crimes. If they had his fingerprints on file and they found the murder weapon covered with prints they would have been able to do comparison. Fingerprints were becoming a part of investigation around this time. I would like to know if they ever found a murder weapons. If these murders occurred today forensic scientists would be able to compare fingerprints and conduct other forensic experiments.

Very sad story. Police case seemed to be relying on information about his supposed behaviours, rather than concrete evidence. The rings and purse are worrying. Whether or not he was a killer, who knows. Often in those days they confessed before being executed. May they all RIP. 🇦🇺

In the picture @ 5:35 minutes the young lady in the middle looks decidedly uncomfortable, perhaps it might have something to do with a corset being to tight, in fact if it was any tighter it could easily cut her in two, that is a ridiculously small waist. Good case! When I lived in San Francisco, I hiked all over the 22nd and Bartlett trying to find where the church had been. That was really hard as it had been torn down (some writers say burned down on purpose) and new buildings were located higglety-pigglety all over. Church goers have a lot of other places to go. Once he was arrested, one newspaper (Hearst?) printed a drawing of Durant's hands so people could imagine how it would be to be attacked by him.
