Don't Look Back In Anger
Kevin Walker Lyrics

Slip inside the eye of your mind
Don't you know you might find
A better place to play
You said that you'd never been
All the things that you've seen
Will slowly fade away
So I'll start the revolution from my bed
Cos you said the brains I had went to my head
Step outside 'coz summertime's in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face
You ain't ever gonna burn my heart out
So Sally can wait, she knows it's too late as we're walking on by
Her soul slides away, "
But don't look back in anger", I heard you say
Take me to the place where you go
Where nobody knows if it's night or day
Please don't put your life in the hands
Of a Rock n Roll band
Who'll throw it all away
Gonna start the revolution from my bed'
Coz you said the brains I had went to my head
Step outside 'coz summertime's in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace, take that look from off your face'
Coz you ain't ever gonna burn my heart out
So Sally can wait
She knows it's too late as she's walking on by
My soul slides away"
But don't look back in anger", I heard you say
So Sally can wait
She knows it's too late as we're walking on by
Her soul slides away"
But don't look back in anger", I heard you say
So Sally can wait
She knows it's too late as she's walking on by
My soul slides away"

But don't look back in anger, don't look back in anger"
I heard you say, "at least not today"

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of "Don't Look Back In Anger," lead singer Kevin Walker tells the listener to look beyond their current situation and into their imagination. He encourages the listener to find a space to escape from. He mentions that despite the things they have seen, they will slowly fade away. This could either be interpreted as a comforting thought, that time heals all wounds, or it could be interpreted as a warning that they must seize the moment since everything is temporary. In the lines “So I’ll start the revolution from my bed, ‘Cos you said the brains I had went to my head”, Walker could be referencing to the idea of social revolution. Also, mention of the line “you said the brains I had went to my head” shows that the singer is quite irreverent.

In the second verse, he alludes to the summer season, and its symbolism of change and growth, as well as the fireplace, which can symbolize home and hearth. He speaks of the character Sally, who is walking away, now that it’s too late. The line, “Take me to the place where you go, where nobody knows if it’s night or day” seems to hint at the idea of being overwhelmed and needing space. The chorus repeats the phrase “Don’t look back in anger,” which suggests forgiveness for the past and focus on the present. The line, “Please don’t put your life in the hands of a Rock ‘n’ Roll band who’ll throw it all away” seems to be a nod to the band and their role in the entertainment industry.
