Late
Kid Freud Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Twenty-one
Lioness too young to be expecting
All alone
You were just having fun
Now the fun′s done and you got no one
Could've happened to anyone
Could′ve happened to anyone
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah

Bleeding out
Middle of the night, see another night
Panning out
Holding on
For a saviour that you know won't come
Could've happened to anyone
Could′ve happened to anyone
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
Ahhh-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah

Oh, she′s late
Feeling all her years slipping away
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
She's late
And mother′s only telling you what you did wrong
I thought you had it all but oh my god

Looks like life's gonna change
Won′t finish school on time
Won't stay young and fun and flirty till you′re
Twenty-fucking-nine
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ahhh-ah
Oo-oo-ooh

Heartache couldn't compare to this
I bet that silly little boy probably won't get missed
She′s late
Never met that nurse before
But she′s guiding you through hell's door

Oh, she′s late
Feeling all her years slipping away
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
She's late
And mother′s only telling you what you did wrong
I thought you had it all but oh my god

Looks like life's gonna change
Won′t finish school on time
Won't stay young and fun and flirty till you're
Twenty-fucking-nine
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ahhh-ah
Could′ve happened to anyone
Could′ve happened to anyone
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah

Bleeding out
Middle of the night, see another life
Panning out
Holding on till the holding on is all you've done

Lashing out again
Are we lovers, are we friends?
Did we forget to draw the line?
Couldn′t make it better if I tried and I didn't
Could′ve happened to anyone
But it happened to you
Oo-oo-oo-ooh
Ahhh, ah-ah-ah-ah, ah

Oh, she's late
Feeling all her years slipping away
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
She′s late
And mother's only telling you what you did wrong
I thought you had it all but oh my god

Looks like life's gonna change
Won′t finish school on time
Won′t stay young and fun and flirty till you're

Twenty-fucking-nine
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ahhh-ah

Overall Meaning

In Kid Freud's song "Late", the singer addresses an unborn child whose young mother is now facing the consequences of an unplanned pregnancy. The lyrics suggest that the lioness is too young to be expecting – she was just having fun but now that the fun is done, she's left with the realization that she'll be facing motherhood alone. The pregnancy is unexpected and could've happened to anyone but it happened to her.

As the song progresses, the singer laments the fact that the pregnancy means the young mother will now face a different future than what she may have imagined. She's bleeding out in the middle of the night, and even though she's holding on for a saviour, she knows that no one is coming. The lyrics suggest that the young mother is feeling her years slipping away, and her own mother is only telling her what she did wrong. The singer points out that the baby will change the young mother's life – she won't finish school on time and won't be able to enjoy her youth and freedom until her late twenties.

The song presents a heartbreaking picture of a young woman who finds herself in a difficult situation. She's faced with the consequences of an unplanned pregnancy, and the lyrics suggest that she's receiving little support from those around her. Ultimately, the message seems to be that the young mother is not alone, and that her situation could happen to anyone.

Hey all, this is Alex - I wrote the song. I am so glad this song is connecting with people, but I have to admit that it was not my story to share - although I shared it anyway.

The lyrics deserve a trigger warning because they involve details of unwanted pregnancy and abortion.

You have no idea how much this song means to me I found this song recently thanks to Spotify weekly and it reminds me of someone close to me how they were in an exact situation like this do they either go through the pregnancy but lose out on her youth or does she commit to the abortion so she can live. The outcome changed her for better and for worse she still to this day thinks about the what ifs but she is at a good point in her life yet there are times where she can’t push forward and cry. Thank you for creating this song
