Take a Train
Kidneythieves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wanted to take a train to the nearest awakening
Took a bullet the speed of light, into infinite time
I noticed a wake, the face was mine
Where was I?
I wanted to take a break at the next gathering
Made a change to white and light to the snap on my behind
I noticed a face, the mother was mine
Where was I?
I wanted to kick dust on the road I'm traveling
Raking time in my mind like leaves, weaved in suffer and cry
I noticed your face, I was looking at mine
Where was I?
I wanted to ask someone but who's listening
Mistake in the belief that all I see is with my eyes
I noticed no one could see my face and I knew that I was flying.
In an instant

I knew were I was again.
I was taking another train to the nearest awakening

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Kidneythieves’ song “Take a Train” explore the notion of self-discovery and finding one’s place in the world. The author prefaces their experience by stating that they “wanted to take a train to the nearest awakening” and the first verse describes their perception of experiencing an out-of-body moment. The metaphorical bullet that they took at the speed of light enabled them to transcend time and space, and they saw their own face reflected in a wake. The singer is not sure where they are, and this dislocation reiterates how they are searching for a sense of purpose in their life.

The second verse continues this journey of self-discovery with the singer changing the color of their clothing to signify a new beginning. They wanted to take a break and gather their thoughts, hoping to find clarity in their life. They notice their mother's face, which further characterizes the idea of generational trauma and the inheritances that we are left with. The singer is still disorientated and unsure of where they are, again emphasizing their sense of being lost.

The final verse expresses the singer's desire to connect with others and to ask for help on their journey to self-discovery. However, they are exasperated with their surroundings and feel unrecognized, so they continue their journey alone. The realization that they were flying coincides with the instant that they establish their place in the world. They know where they are and are on the right path towards their awakening.

Overall, the song's message can be interpreted as an optimistic call for self-discovery and self-actualization, while acknowledging the difficulties inherent in that process.

thanks for posting without the ridiculous 11 minutes of silence. I never understood that

I have seen a few examples where hidden tracks were successfully veiled but the usually occur earlier on the album's playlist. The add a sort of digital subtrack that bridges between two grounded tracks. I'm not sure if the two tracks serving as an anchor point for the subtrack is necessary but I should think they could do this at the end of the album as well.

That's exactly what they were doing. This practice of "hidden" tracks goes back to the audio cassette era at least (and probably the vinyl era too.) It actually "worked" back then since you couldn't shuffle the play order.

It continued into the CD era, which was just silly, because as soon as you put the disc in the CD player you could see the track count was one higher than what was listed on the back of the package. Some especially "crafty" artists would even join the hidden song to the last listed song (with a giant silent spacer in between), but that only fooled the people who never stopped to question why the last track was 20 minutes long if the song ended after 4.

I'm so glad that the digital distribution era finally put a stop to this nonsense (at least AFAIK.)

The silence was from the original album. The track was 11 minutes of silence before the song began. I assume they did this to make it seem like nothing was there, to make it a sort of "hidden" track.
