What Is Love
Kiesza Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't know why you're not there
I gave you my love, but you just don't care
Was I right, was I wrong
Give me a sign

What is love?
Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more
What is love?
Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more

Ooh, ooh

I don't know, what can I do?
What can I say it's up to you
I know we're right, just me and you
I can't go on

What is love?
Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more
What is love?
Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more, no more

Ooh, ooh yeah
Ooh, ooh, ooh yeah

I want no other, no other lover
This is your life, but it's our time
But when we are together, I need you forever
Is this love?

What is love?
Baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more
What is love?
Baby don't hurt me, baby don't hurt me, no more, no more

Don't hurt me, no more
Baby don't hurt me, no more, no more

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Kiesza's song “What Is Love” depict a common human experience of feeling confused and uncertain about love. The singer expresses her thoughts and emotions about an absent lover, questioning whether they truly cared about the love she offered. She wonders if she made the right decision to love this person and whether her feelings were reciprocated. The chorus, which repeats the question “What is love?” and the plea “Baby don’t hurt me, no more,” expresses the universal desire to understand and experience love without suffering.

The song's title references the 1990 hit song “What Is Love” by Haddaway, which also explores the meaning and nature of love. However, Kiesza's song takes a different approach by focusing on personal experiences rather than abstract concepts. The upbeat rhythm and catchy melody of the song contrast with the somber lyrics, reflecting the complexity of love and relationships. The oohs in the chorus add a touch of vulnerability and accentuate the singer's plea for answers.

Overall, Kiesza's “What Is Love” is a relatable and introspective song that reflects the ups and downs of love and relationships. It captures the common human desire to find love without pain and asks the age-old question of what love truly means.

This was amazing. She took one of my favorite dance/club songs from the 90's and really gave the lyrics the credit they deserve. The song has a whole new meaning and an intensity of emotion, sadness, and loss that the dance track hides. Bravo!

@wolfie1027

No one needs to be more sad

@justwrath2049

@Amadeus Monroe I don't agree, in the sense that some people need to accept sadness and live it out, healthily. That emotion has its place.

@suzawilo

So well said💖

@janisbrown5728

There r all types of sadness it's how u deal with it that counts

@svenner80

True. I didn't really get this is a cover at first (hehe, idiot ;-)) but my advantage was I listened without prejudice.

So I thought, well the lyrics are quite on point and the tune and singing is not bad either ... Stop! This is Haddaway!

And hey man, these lyrics really are good. Seems they've actually hided a quality song in a Eurodance trash.

I love her cover of it. It totally changes how the lyrics come off. It changes the meaning of the song. It makes it more vulnerable, more heartbreaking. I think what she did with it was unique and powerful. Props.

I can't put my finger on it but there's something about Kiesza. Her voice is so melodic and entrancing in it's rising vibrato and effervescent energy.
