Just The Beginning
Kill Your Idols Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So many people(3x)have no clue There is no sincerity(3x)in what they do Do you love music-or financial gain? Take pride in creation-or searching for fame? If you want to get ahead, you’ll just play the game Your objective is pompous and lame Is it expression-or just to get laid? Is it your life-or just to get paid? We don’t need to live by the choices you’ve made We’ll do it our way, because we’re not afraid

Overall Meaning

The opening lines to Kill Your Idols’ song Just The Beginning are a scathing criticism of people who lack sincerity in their art, specifically music. This is suggested in the repeated use of the phrase “so many people have no clue”. The lyrics suggest that these people may be more focused on fame or financial gain, rather than creating art for the sake of expression or a love of music.

The song then poses the question of whether these people create music for expression or just for personal gain. This is seen in the lines “Is it expression-or just to get laid? Is it your life-or just to get paid?”. The song offers a counterpoint to these choices, suggesting that there is another way, one that is not driven by the need to “play the game” or be pompous.

In the chorus, the song seeks to redefine what it means to be a musician, suggesting that one does not need to adhere to the choices made by the mainstream. It seeks to empower those who want to do things their way, without being afraid of rejection or alienation from the mainstream. This is encapsulated in the lines “We don’t need to live by the choices you’ve made, we’ll do it our way, because we’re not afraid.”

I saw these guys on Acid at a US Bombs show at Bo Jangles in Roseville, Ca in the very early 2000s. These guys put on a fucking HECK of a live show! I was just tripping balls and dancing with the other kids, having a good old time because didn’t know they were a straight edge band. THEN they covered Small Man, Big Mouth by Minor Threat, which really altered rmy acid trip….
But thankfully Duane Peters snapped me out of my existential internal struggle when he talked shit to the wrong girls and promptly got his ass kicked in the Bo Jangles Parking lot by said girls.
Good times…
