Founding members Jaz Coleman (vocals, keyboards) and Geordie Walker (guitars) have been the only constant members, with Geordie having died on the 26th of November 2023 in Prague following a stroke 2 days earlier.

A key influence on industrial rock, their early music was described by critics Stephen Thomas Erlewine and John Dougan as well as industrial metal and "quasi-metal, dancing to a tune of doom and gloom," which gradually evolved over the years, incorporating elements of electronic music, synth-pop, gothic rock, and alternative rock, though always emphasizing Coleman's "savagely strident vocals."

Finding modest commercial success, Killing Joke have influenced many later bands, such as Nirvana, Ministry, Amen, Lamb of God, Nine Inch Nails, Napalm Death, Amebix, Big Black, Godflesh, Tool, Prong, Metallica, Primus, Jane's Addiction, Soundgarden, Foo Fighters, Faith No More, Blacklist, Shihad and Korn, all of whom have at some point cited some debt of gratitude to Killing Joke.

@ciao214Z I didn't just randomly hear the song and make wild assumptions about the band because of it. I am familiar with their entire recorded output, and there are parts of it (especially the sixth and seventh studio albums) which I really can't listen to. That is mainly because of the production, but that in turn is because the band was trying at that point to replicate their earlier chart success. Once they gave up on this - which took a while - and went back to pleasing themselves, the problem went away

This is such a dark masterpiece. I would love to see what someone could do with a cover version of it as a duet between a soldier and his girlfriend, but rewritten in a major key in the style of Material Girl and other hits like Girls Just Want to Have Fun. The songwriting and sound is very different to the previous two albums for the most part (despite BTATS getting tamed by the label on its original release). Some of OTG is even kinda prog rock strangely enough, and the whole thing a lot more bombastic. It works for some tracks (America is great) but really overcooks others I think. Even Jaz said at the time he wanted to do something completely different to previous KJ, but later wished it had been released separately

It's not about whether you like it or not, the bass player and drummer left the band embarrassed by the album. The progressive chord structures was much better on the following album "Extremeties...".
But this album, its just synths and half realised sketches of songs, 'America' being the most commercial sounding hence this video. It does not follow on thematically from the two previous records at all. If you like it, fine, but please don't try and say this is a Killing Joke Album, or that to point out that it's not a Killing Joke Album is somehow wrong.

@Nicholas Yep, in NYC recently, 5th avenue by Madison Sq. Park. I think it was whole bike, not just the lock being used to beat someone. (lol) It's all ops, getting regular people fighting each other like the CIA did in Central America in the 80s...i.e. the playbook for a coup is being used on us, as it was perfected by Anglo-American civilian intelligence in the 3rd World and to a degree on the Soviet Union. The thought is to bring down two giants the same way, but we are not the USSR. This is not our first executive coup attempt either first it was JFK and now this.

In 1962 the attempt to start war with Cuba and thus the USSR was foiled by JFK. We were weeks away from war with Russia via Syria by the end of 2016. Continental Europe and East Asia, greater Eurasia you might say, all benefit from US - Russian confrontation and mutual devastation if not destruction - who benefits ultimately is, at least me, no one but the genocidally suicidal old world elites. Funny that we were intended to take the role of an unthinking battering ram for the British Empire after participating in the World Wars, but after these past twenty years of wars we know better about how they've divided and conquered before. What is around the corner, if the blue bloods steal the presidency or any office, after the people have spoken - will be unlike the way any other people in the world would handle it as we have numerous measures intended to keep imperial powers of any kind from simply buying the legitimate offices and then taking over; 2021 is an interesting time to be alive. Killing Joke is amazing to this day and I know Jaz has expressed love for the US Constitution. It would be some joke if we made it through this because the US didn't collapse and we stayed out of foreign war. No drama in that I guess.

I know this album was supposed to be asolo effort from Jaz Coleman, but for some reason the record company released it as a Killing Joke album(hense the different bass player and drummer in this video). Geordi is on the entire album on guitar. While its really NOT a true KJ album in the sense that is was meant to be,IMHO,it is ne of their BEST ALBUMS AND its a shame they never toured from it or really played any songs from it live. Love the album and this song. The Calling, America, and Outside the Gate are my personal favorites for this album,including others

This song expresses my feelings for America as an Ex-Pat pretty good. I was so Patriotic and naive back then, even joined the Military to make my old man proud and honor grand pop.
Then I got stationed in Germany in the early 2000's and travelled Europe. I still have some love for America but yeah... I ain't that Patriotic anymore

Quite a haunting keyboard here... I'm not too much into "political' songs, so the lyrics are less my thing, but melodically, even if it isn't at all beautiful, it is in an odd way somewhat intoxicating. I kept listening till the end.

It's a fantastic synthpop ish track, darkly humorous. This album gets a lot of hate for not sounding like a Killing Joke album 'should' and being more overtly theatrical, but that just holds you back from enjoying what's actually a brilliant record.

@BST Innovations Yeah Outside The Gate is awesome, I just got the America 12" single for the artwork and paid nothing as it is considered a junk record. lol! Geordie and Jaz have been only constant of every KJ album. Big Paul Ferguson actually put a song out in late April called Extrapolate, album in a few days, I was not expecting to be impressed. I think he's been living in NYC, I also live in the city, he definitely expressed our state of living; something beautiful and difficult. I had no idea he is such a great singer and lyricist, you can really hear his writing voice in first six Joke records.

I just don't understand why KJ only had one hit here in Holland, because we dutch were always the first to pick up
the best music from the UK, so someone here made a big mistake for not promoting KJ in our country.
The same for the band called "love & money" because they were fantastic aswel and also fits perfectly in the taste
of my fellow dutchies.

Daniel Delayne It’s a missing a bit of edge but it’s a great song really, the synth sound is really great with that ironic undertone and the ‘plastic’ promise of america. It’s more complex than it seems for a synthpop song. But the rest this album the synth sound doesnt work so well when its trying to be totally serious

Fun fact: This was the only Killing Joke album that never got an American release. The band s American label Virgin records was not very interested so it was shelved and never released in the States. And not long after the band ended their collaboration with Virgin records altogether because of their legal problems with their management and their British label. Kinda ironic.

Exactly as a New Yorker and American I love this song and album Stay One Jump Ahead, Obsession and Outside the Gate (title track)... like all of their albums it takes listening to the lyrics. Wish they've have done New Cold War in a similar style.
