1. Killing Time started under the name Raw Deal. The band first released demo tracks on the Blackout! compilation "Where The Wild Things Are..", and others. They signed to In-Effect/Relativity records shortly after that. Forced to change their name because of a UK glam act with the same moniker, the band rechristened Killing Time, and released their Brightside album in 1990. For several years the band played regionally and went out to the West Coast for a few shows with SOIA. With escalating violence and less punk rock camaraderie at it's shows, the band went on an indefinite hiatus with members exploring various other projects. After a year or so of dormancy, KT resurfaced and began playing some shows. Soon after they released the Unavoidable EP on Blackout!, a blistering 3 song EP that showcased that the band lost none of their power during the time away. This was followed in 1997 by their second album, The Method. Soon after the release of this album, the band called it quits again. In 2005, KT was back for a series of sold-out reunions, a CBGB matinee, and ill fated scheduled appearances at the now defunct Hellfest and Posi-Numbers. The band played a reunion gig at the 2006 NYHC Superbowl Of Hardcore and randomly plays other shows.
2. In 1982, then Chakra members Bun Itakura(板倉文), Ma*To (藤井将登), and Kazumo Shimizu (清水一登) seperately started an experimental unit. The band began as "暇潰し" ('himatsubushi'), or 'waste of time' in English. In 1983 the trio began to perform live. These event's strengths drew from member's free-form and fluid playing style. Neko Saitou (斎藤ネコ), MECKEN (荻原基文), and Whacho (帆足哲昭) became regular fixed members, and in 1986 released the album BOB on Epic/Sony. Soon after, Jun Aoyama (青山純) would join. They have released four albums and one compilation. Each member is a professional musician in session-work, compositions, or arrangements, commercial/film musics, etc. Together with Kiyohiko Senba's Haniwa project, they've built up an enormous family of talented musicians known as the "Haniwa-Killing Time Connexion."
Brightside
Killing Time Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To know what’s good and bad
I don’t want to look back in time
And think of what i could have had
But that same time is breathing down my neck
And I’ve got to hold on.
If i lose it all now all hope will be gone.
Try to look on the Brightside
Found out there isn’t one.
But I’ve got to make it work
Can't bare to live my life with regret.
Haunted by memories, never able to forget.
Endless minutes and endless hours
Lead on to endless days.
If I lose it all now
I know I’ll never be the same.
I waited too long for something like this
To come my way
If I lose it all now
There’s only one person to blame.
One to cry, one to crawl, one to die, one to fall
Captive of time, never to be free
The one to blame, that one is me
The song Brightside by Killing Time is a reflection on the different aspects of life, the challenges, and opportunities that come with it. The opening line of the song sets the tone, with the singer indicating that they have seen enough of the world to know what is good and bad. This implies that the events in the world have helped the singer gain perspective on life and, as a result, can distinguish between what is good and bad, which sets the foundation for the rest of the song.
The lyric "Everyday, I say to myself it can't be done, try to look on the Brightside, found out there isn't one" shows that the singer has been trying to remain optimistic, but it is no longer working. They have been trying to see the positive side of things, but their efforts are futile, and it has gotten them nowhere. This is further emphasized in the following line, "But I've got to make it work, can't bear to live my life with regret, haunted by memories never able to forget." The singer acknowledges that although they may not see the Brightside, they need to keep pushing forward and not give up, for they fear the regret of not trying and being haunted by the memories of their failures.
Overall, the song gives a sense of perseverance even in the face of adversity. It encourages the listener to keep pushing forward, even when the road ahead looks bleak. The lyrics portray the need to continue fighting for what one wants and not let fear or regret hold them back.
